June 2nd i will be setting off from Doncaster up to scotland to john o groats with a friend of mine.
We intend to have a steady run up and be there by sunday night after stopping off midway on saturday night.
The plan is to ride down to inverness then across to fort william. Monday/tuesday
Tuesday/ Wednesday we intend to go down the west coast of scotland then into cumbria and stop off at lake windermere...
The additional plan is to ride up Hardknott pass which is the steepest road in britain and look down on windermere.
There will be no rush and additional routes will be added has we intend to get home on friday evening,
so if time allows and weather permitting we will deviate routes to pick up some more scenery

Make sure you go North of the Loch from Inverness to Ft. William. Been a long time but I recollect that being the better side. Yes a long time since I was all the way up there on a bike. I think 38 years...... so maybe its changed a bit. Enjoy.

Make sure you go North of the Loch from Inverness to Ft. William. Been a long time but I recollect that being the better side. Yes a long time since I was all the way up there on a bike. I think 38 years...... so maybe its changed a bit. Enjoy.

This is correct, the A82 the north side of the loch. The other side's more like a goat track.

To be honest if I had 2 days to get from John O' Groats to Fort William I'd miss out Inverness altogether, go across the north coast, down to Ullapool - Gairloch - Strathcarron - Dornie - A87 - A82 - Fort William. 300+ miles but infinitely more interesting than the coming down the A9 and A82.

Oh yes, I'm familiar with the pass - I've been there (I guess that given it's name, I had to).

After all, the Hardknott pass has so much more panache than the Limpdean pass that Pete is still searching for

No problem. If you do decide to do the route I've suggested then Ullapool is probably the best place to stop overnight. Plenty of places to eat and drink and it's almost exactly half way.

When you get up to the far north be very careful about fuelling as and when, especially on a Sunday when lots of places still treat it as a day of rest. Which makes a refreshing change. Until you're running out of petrol.
