Windows Vista v Windows 7

#1 Post by fatboy » Mon Mar 12, 2012 6:04 pm

Ive been told by many folk that my laptops sometimes stuttering performance is largely down to Vista. I recently downloaded Explorer 9, things are slower. My mate could not uninstall Ex 9 (which he said is contributing to slow performance )
I have kaspersky security, recently de fragged ect,
Any ideas on what this would cost?

To uninstall E9 try this.. I had problems with it and had the same.. it didnt want to go!

As for performance, how much RAM are you running? Vista needs at least 1GB for normal multitasking but thrives on up to 3GB. Obviously your lappy would need to be able to support the upgrade..

Nice one ! :smt006
Im running 3gb. Ive been told even Windows XP is better than Vista, I do verry little with laptop other than browsing, emails ect. No massive files/downloads (apart from the Falco manual Im gonna download soon)
Would I have to go to somewhere like PC World to find a copy of 7 or vista ?

www.software4students.co.uk

Cheapest place for M$ software

And vista is poor - but I would back everything up and do a fresh install of it....

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

That's the one to have IMHO

And get in soon - offers from M$ end soon

To work at all in any sane way vista needs 2gb even then I would rather have an etch a sketch. There was a downgrade package to xp but now win 7 is out not worth it. For one practical reason ... It's old and as such was written for handling memory etc in a different way.
Can't recall if you said you had 3gb ram but win 8 handles the memory available better. As pete says if the offer is good get the grown up version as MS messed about with licensing on lower versions so installing things like language packs can be restricted. It also allows you to run a lot more RAM
Your other option would be to go nits for being geeky and install Linux which I think can be great for peoe who don't want to do more than you do especially as if you set it up well any time it goes wrong you reinstall it in about 6 minutes

Summary Vista is crap get rid of it ;)
For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.
That said when it comes to motorbikes, I like to ride side saddle with a nice frock

and while you are at it, buy the office they have on offer - for 40 quid you can get the full enchilada.... and i think outlook - if you insist on using windows, is worth it

even if you will only ever use the rest once in a blue moon, the combined price of office and win7 is still less than an official full price version of win7....

it really is, to me, a no brainer

(Naturally enough, I do not have a copy LOL - I use a proper computer system :)!! )

Will look into this more when I have eaten and feel almost human again

....

Any of your friends got an external drive you can borrow?

As M$ are changing their market place a bit I would rather have hard media

But - acquiring a DVD copy is not hard

If you have time - say a week - go for the DVD

Thans Aladin,
I will buy the dvd tonight, my disc drive is a driver problem (caused by cat knocking empty beer can off telly onto keyboard, few drops of beer stopped most things working, a mate uninstalled/reinstalled everything but disc drive)
