Battery question

#1 Post by Tonyunn » Mon Mar 12, 2012 3:58 pm

I have my bike on an optimiser, take it off start the bike, first time everytime.

Over the weekend I left it off over night and then tried to start the bike, it started but the battery bottomed out if you see what I mean.

Is this normal or should I start looking for a new battery as when I start using it for work it will be off the optimiser during the day.

It should hold charge.over 3weeks.
Might have a draw from a fulty alarm etc. Or may be its age.
Big power draw to start up a vtwin .

No Alarm but I may test it out over the coming weekends until I'm sure.

Any recomendations for batteries.

I have been looking at them myself - seem to be an all round improvement on the standard types. See here for spec

Deffo sounds like your optimised is disguising a failing battery.

I tried a Motobatt and had a nightmare. It would fail to start almost every other day whether it was on the optimiser or not. I even had it fail to start right after disconnecting it from the optimiser.

I didn't like the bolt in terminals either.

Just changed mine for one of these

So far so good, never had a misstart or reset since fitting it.

Can the last person to buy a battey for a Falco let me know what type or make it was.

Cheers

Just looked for a DEKA battery and the company Raceparts sell them but don't list the type number in Falco-pops reply.

Oh, very happy.

We do shed loads of touring around Europe and sometimes leave the bikes for days without starting so I need to trust the batteries on both baby's

motobatt are excellent.

I've been using them for years.
They even hold a charge over weeks of snow.

Just because a battery reads 12v doesn't mean it's good.
8 AAAs will show 12v but won't start a big twin.

Good point and I should have mentioned that just because I had a bad experience Motobatt shouldn't be discounted. Many others have been very happy with them.

A bloke I know has one in his TL1000 and swears by it. I spoke to him about my issues and he pretty much disbelieved me until I had a no start right in front of him.

I reckon I just got a bad one, I guess it can happen.

Unfortunately for me when I took it back to the shop I bought it from they had gone out of busuiness, so I had to persevere until funds allowed a new one.

After doing lots of reading taking advice on here I have bit the bullet and gone for the Motobatt AGM type.

I will let you know how it goes once it is on the bike.

I've got one of the high-power AGM batteries on my VFR and it turns the old lump over (not literally, you understand) VERY quickly and starts first time every time. It also seems to hold its charge longer when the bike is away from its Accumate.

I'll be replacing the Falco with similar when it's time.
