Help needed on how to fit 2003 RSV yellow sachs shock

#1 Post by Blackranger68 » Sat Sep 17, 2011 12:08 am

Right guys and gals, need more of your wisdom before i go crazy trying to fit a 2003 RSV sachs yellow spring shock and triangles plus dog bone (linkages)

The story so far, old nasty blue shock has been removed along with its linkages, 2003 RSV sachs shock offered up, bolted into place at the top part of the frame, just under the rider seat. using the old bolt fromthe Blue shock. Seems that the RSV shock has a bit of movement about 3-5mm n an up and down fashion when its bolted up and the shock is not sitting tight as it should, unlike the blue one.

Have now took the RSV shock back out and looking at it the top mounting hole diameter of the shock is larger than the original Blue one and the original bolt is therefore a little too small in diameter.

Now to complicate things when I removed the top bolt for the blue shock I noticed a spacer in the frame hole on the left side where the nut goes that holds the shock in place. The spacer has the same size of diameter of hole as the original bolt the blue shock was mounted with. Im guessing here but do I need a different diameter bolt and what do I do about the spacer?

Now I thoth I would give it a go at bolting up the 2003 RSV dog bone and triangles despite the shock having some movement. I was very careful toensure that the arrow on the triangles pointed to the front of the bike. However I can get all the mounting holes to line up except the one at the swing arm, its just out a bout a few milimeter to the right when its attached to the shock and it does not matter if i raise the shock up the 3-5mm of slack, the blooming triangle still wont line up. I should also tell you that the rear wheel is on the floor and if i was to raise the bike a bit the dogbone and the bottom of the shock would be hitting each other and i still wouldnt be able to get the triangle to line up with the last hole. Needless to say I am confused. Am i using the wrong triangles, dog bone and what about the faken bolt which holds it to the frame just under the rider seat?

Please help before I go insane trying to figure this out :smt017

Regards

The top mounting bolts are exactly the same part number for both bikes:

I wonder whether the bush in the shock has worn (part 12 in the first link)

I've never had a yellow spring sachs (well I have but I never fitted it to the bike as I picked up an ohlins before I fitted it) but re the misalignment, have you checked it's not bent?

Oh yes - and when it's all bolted up, raising the back wheel compresses the shock and moves it away from the dog-bone :smt002

Gonna sound daft but are you sure they are 2003 not 2004. Can you see any part numbers and I will check them against the 2004 I have in mine.

... or just post photos of them - they look different so we should be able to identify them.

Will try and get some photos and part numbers. Shock and linkages was from Tash with only 4k on it. looks straight to me.

Off to get the camera and look for part numbers. Be back soon.

Oh also fitted clutch jet kit can now get the old neutral easily enough now and Firestorm side stand is a good improvement over the piece of cheese of a side stand that aprilia gave it.

Ok guys thanks for your input. I have managed to get the shock and linkages on. Stupid me forgot to put the spacers in the top of the shock. Had asked Tash what they were for and he didnt think they belonged to the shock,

After your posts I went back and thought about it and hey presto the spacers int he box fit the top of the shock. So spaners came out again ahd some more effort I got there. Still had some difficulties getting the last hole to line up properly however I took a trolley jack out and raised the bike a few mill and hey presto it worked.

shock and linkages now on see pictures. How do I get pictures on to this message? Obviously something to do with the Img button at the top of the screen.

Question now is there any standard set up for the rebound, dampening and spring height?
