Long time!

#1 Post by rick » Tue Aug 23, 2011 11:11 am

Both here and since I last saw my Falco!

However tomorrow morning is pickup day and really looking forward to being re-united!

But, just in case I have a dead battery... is it ok to bump start the falco? Done it on an inline 4 in the past but never the vtwin.

Good luck with bump starting it. I've had quite a lot of experience bump starting stuff, used to have to bump start the old racers. Not had any joy with the falco even with help, maybe the slipper clutch has some thing to do with it but it felt like the wheel was locked rather than the clutch slipping.

Take jump leads......

It'll bump if the battery isn't too flat. If it's flat flat then it won't power the fuel injection pump or the ECU, so it'll never start.

If it's only flat enough so it won't turn it past compression then you've got a chance. But only in second gear, and only down a hill. I've been able to bump mine a few times but it's hard work and you'll need a good head of speed up.

And even then you'll be lucky.

Optimate or a new battery?

please take a friend and a video camera if you are going to try and bump start it - i will just get some popcorn

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Yes, as Ben says, you can bump a Falco that has a bit of momentum. I've done that a few times (the first times I tried I just locked the back wheel but with a bit of practice it's not too bad).
I've never done it as a run-and-jump type of bump-start .... I think that's beyond my abilities.

Never bump started a Falco, but stopped to help a bloke pushing a H***a Firestorm a few weeks ago, with a battery that did not have enough to turn it over.
He pushed then jumped on with me still pushing, didn't fire as he jumped on as planned and no better with me pushing him and the bike.
Then repeated the exercise with same result initially, but with just me pushing he dropped the clutch again and it fired up.
He went off with a cheery wave and I briefly felt good, but then looked back to my bike way down the road and thought have I got the strength to walk back that far with my chest pounding.
Not a good thing to do at my advanced age!
Got back and just sat on the bike for a while to recover before finally riding off.
So it does prove that a Firestorm can be bump started this way, but not with my help next time, as I may not survive it!

Cheers guys!

We have leads somewhere in the container so if bumping doesn't work (I'll be sure to video it!) i'll pop to local shop and pickup some cheapies!

Looks nice there but can't you have the plate under the back light like we do here?

It IS under ..... when you look at it from here - the whole bike is upside down
