The hypersonic plane, which is supposed to travel at Mach 20, or 21,000 km/h, could potentially provide the US military with a platform for striking targets anywhere on the planet within minutes using conventional weapons.

Such a weapon, still in development, is part of what the US Air Force has dubbed "prompt global strike" capability.

"The ultimate goal is a capability that can reach anywhere in the world in less than an hour," DARPA said on its website.
Forgetting how cool the engineering is...

Does anybody else find it a little bit scary that the Yanks are working on a weapon that can destroy a target anywhere in the world in a matter of minutes before anyone's worked out what it is? This is a nation that's modern history is based on religious fundamentalism, racial persecution and genocide!! We're not safe from these lunatics!

History has been one unending arms race, pre-history too.
I'm relatively happy that the yanks stay ahead of some of the alternative regimes.
In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.
