ipod help needed

#1 Post by lazarus » Thu Mar 22, 2007 9:54 pm

I'm deep in the doodoo at the moment. kids bought my dearest an ipod for her birthday, and I just connected it up to the PC and Itunes to get it set up. Without a single action on my part (its the truth, your honour!) the bl**y software named the ipod with my name, searched the pc, found my music (not her taste, of course) and promptly uploaded as much of it as the ipod could take.

so how do I change the name of the ipod to "wife's ipod"? and how do I stop it from loading up any music file it finds and get it only to sync with a file of my wife's music?

and quick - before she finds out and accuses me of pinching her birthday present!

Do you have multiple accounts on the machine? (Ie, people have to enter their username & password before they can use it?)

If so, you'll need to use your wife's account to run iTunes from and do all the filling / emptying / etc for the iPod there.

From what I can see, iTunes and the iPod are closely tied to the one user account. It appears to be the same on the Mac, too.

that is correct

tip for the future for anyone using ipods/etc

I have a large external hard drive connected to my pc that has all our mp3's on it - all machines on the network can access it. My wife has her ipod set up on one machine, mine is on another - we both import the required folder via itunes from the large hard drive - this keeps all the tunes in one place but acts as a back up as well. OH - read very carefully about what it says when you remove a file or folder from the Ipod.....

One thing that may be worth doing is to have a separate play list for the iPod. That way you can add / delete music on the iPod easily - no need to fill it with stuff you'll never listen to (or don't want to listen to).

As for removing files / folders from the iPod (not through iTunes) is a bit like what happened to me when I accidentally erased all the music on my laptop and thought I could easily copy it back from the iPod. Nope, it don't work like that... :smt013

No stress - it was a few years ago that I did the big erase, and haven't been dumb enough to do it again. :smt004
