Me again - email problem

#1 Post by BikerGran » Mon Jul 11, 2011 7:37 pm

:smt006

I'm having trouble with a just a few emails in Outlook Express - I send them but they never get to the people I've sent them to. They don't get bounced back to me so I don't know they haven't arived!

Two of them are hotmail addresses, the other was an email form on a website so that may have just been their site.

But it's happened at least 3 times now with my daughter's hotmail.

Everything else is working fine so I'm really puzzled!

Any ideas?

outbox as opposed to sent mail
any junk mail filters at either ends
emails generally have a TTL time to live before they die in the ether so maybe there was a problem with the route it took
and your Outlook Express surely links to a web account somewhere if it is a web based account try sending direct from the web account

I've not been receiving emails from you either - maybe the problem is bigger than we first thought .....

I've never had it happen before, and the emails are in my sentbox not the outbox.

Yes I've tried sending direct from my webmail, no go there either.

I've emailed Orange to ask about the problem, filled in my name, my email address, the telephone number that's used for the broadband etc etc and got a reply saying....
Thanks for your email.

We'd like to help you but we need some more information before we can get started.

Please ask the registered account holder to provide the following
information:

*full name
*account email address
*telephone number from which you dial into the Internet
That's looking promising then........

if it is OE

And no mail is being sent the problem will be different to if only some emails are not being sent They will likely ask
Can you send any mail??
Can you receive mail ?
are there any mails you are aware of not receiving?
Have you compacted your mail folders
How large is your mail folders especially sent mail

If it is all mail that cannot ve sent then chances are your outgoing mail configuration settings are wrong in OExpress. You can trace outgoing mail by going to Tools then options then the Maintanence tab and make sure mail is selected under the trouble shooting option then click ok / close

Then try to send an email to the affected address and assuming it fails you then look / search for a file usually called Smtp.log. It should open in something like Notepad and will have an error code which relates to the messages path to the mail server
for example 250 - Requested action taken and completed which is what you would hope for :)

Sorry if that is a bit full on but it can be quicker to force or find an error code than it is to go through all the various bits

Even if it doesn't contain a specific error it should make finding the cause of the problem easier

If it is just specific addresses is to recreate the address for those specific people then at least you know it is not a corruption in the address book o

Update on this - it'#s getting really annoying now as Orange want details of what email addresses I can't send to/can't recieve from - well that depends what day it is! And last night I couldn't send or recieve anything!

It's not me cos emails from my daughters (which I know they've sent) often don't appear in my webmail.

Now Lucy tells me she's not able to send to her dad - guess who his provider is? Yup, Orange.

So I reckon it's time for a change! But who do I change TO?

I was looking at a Sky package - TV< broadband and phone - but the small print is so convoluted I don't want to go there.

What about BT? - since we already have a connection (ha ha) with them?

Any other suggestions? I'm really disappointed as I've been with freeserve/wanadoo/orange for years and when they've done an upgrade in the past the (slight) problems have gone away fairly quickly, but this is getting boring!
