Rear Brake...again!

#1 Post by Dalemac » Thu Jun 23, 2011 2:45 pm

Hi Guys,

My rear brake is playing up again, so i have decided to relpace the disk and thoroughly clean and reassemble the caliper.

The rear disk will not come off the wheel. i have removed the bolts from the wheel and cleaned it thoroughly, and even lightly apped it with a tubber hammer, but the thing will not budge. i guess it has siezed itself on through extreme heating and cooling.

Any ideas how i can get it off?

thanks,

Dale

Bigger Hammer...............Seriously.

Have a go through the spokes of the wheel using the shaft of the hammer against the disc in a 12 6 9 3 pattern. They do get stuck on but a decent knock should get it off. Its down to the different metals corroding toegether. Steel & alloy is not a good long term mix.

PS Whats a tubber hammer?? :smt005 :smt005

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handle bars to the saddle.

Now i cant get the one of the fking pistons out the rear caliper, even after splitting the caliper into two. i guess this could be the cause of the sticking brake. if i ever get it out, its definately going to be new seal time

I usually try to get the pistons part of the way out while they're still connected. Easy enough to do.. ye just have to alternate which piston you stop moving forward. :smt001

yeah i got one out completely, the other one is about 1/3 of the way out. Gonna have to go and buy one of those piston remover forecep style things.

na ye not. glorified pair of mole grips. if you're careful, you'll be able to get a decent enough grip to wriggle the blighter out. don't use heat as it'll be pointless. if you've got access to a good supply of compressed air, i've had them pop out using it before now.. bit hit n' miss though.. ye need a good seal and the pressure isn't always enough.. depends how stuck it is. :smt001

if you take care, you wont damage the piston. Grip on a part that doesn't got past the seal. :smt002
