Car question

#1 Post by BikerGran » Mon May 09, 2011 10:24 am

I may need to top up the fluid in the power steering on my Nissan Primera. The handbook says 'use only Dexron type fluid' - does this mean any general fluid available off the shelf in a garage? - if I can find one that sells car-related stuff, most just seems to have groceries these days!

Dexron is a GM tradename and not all dexron fluids are compatible. So what a Dexron type is God only knows as the Beach boys would say.

There again I may be completely wrong.

According to Wikipedia the term is used much the same way as 'Hoover' (tho not for the same kind of products obviously!)

That's what I thought.

Last time the car went to the workshop I asked them to investigate a noise. The boss told me they had topped up the steering fluid and it was ok now, then the mechanic said no, it wasn't low enough to cause that and I would need a new pump fairly soon. Now it's making the noise again so I thought I'd try a top up again - why didn't they just fix the thing while they had it? That's why I give them my phone number, so they can check whether I want something done. They didn't top up the aircon either cos he said it was better to do that at the beginning of summer. I only take it in once a year for MOT and whatever else needs doing, now I'll have to take it back again for those - I know the bill was less, but I had the money then!

Damn cars.

Damn motors.

Yep. ATF. Dexton will be the type, so as long as it says it on the bottle, you'll be alright. :smt001
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handle bars to the saddle.

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Don't think so - it may have just been a polite way of saying it didn't need topping up? Garage boss was a friend of my daughter, used to be round my house as a teenager, those are the only peeps I get any respect from! (even tho he's a married man now and I'm not going to be telling him off for drinking or whatever!). It's generally a good place with a good rep and sensible prices AND it's not far away and if I have a small problem I can pop in and get it looked at and it doesn't cost me anything - I wasn't having a serious moan. Well maybe I was but I wasn't really entitled!
