Traffic Calming Grumble

#1 Post by randomsquid » Tue May 03, 2011 7:48 pm

So, was going down a road I used to know well. Fun s bend in the middle, exit at 90 degrees to entrance.

As I came in I could see huge crash cushions on one side and a mini roundabout where the middle of the bend was.

Nothing about so I picked the ghost of a fun line and sort of went for it. Failed to see one of those chopped off cone type speed bumps on the other side. I was so surprised at being airborne I forgot to stand up and nearly broke my arse bone when I landed.

And they do this in the name of road safety?

Poor observation, each road is different every time you ride it and should be treated as such :smt016

If only they'd leave them alone ...... just visited my parennts today and there are even more inappropriate 50 mph zones on the route ..... 60 was far too slow for most of them.
They've even dropped some to 40.

All it will do is make journeys slower and raise the number of people breaking the rules and the margin by which they are broken.

No objection to rules where they are necessary and limits where they are appropriate .... we just seem to be increasingly limiting things to the level of the most incompetent driver in the worst weather conditions.

Don't get me started on dangerous speed bumps and the chicanes on our estate that have led to innumerable accidents .....

They changed the sequence of the traffic lights at the crossroads in the middle of our very small town, so now you don't get opposing traffic turning across each other of course it also means there are more cars stopped for longer. This was ok in winter when they changed it but it's the holiday season now!

Net result - far more cars (locals in the know) using the back streets to avoid the TL - and our back streets are VERY narrow!

I can hardly be expected to ride quickly, fiddle with my mp3 player and look where I'm going all at the same time now can I?

In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.

Apparently roads with a 50 limit don't need the same minimum maintenance as roads with a 60 limit. So it's nothing to do with safety, but all to do with cost cutting.

At least around here and in Oxfordshire, main roads with a 40 limit seem to be the main roads that local councillors/councillors' friends live on.

Ah ..... so in the world of self-fulfilling-prophesies ..... if you stick a 50 limit on a road, it won't be too long before it deteriorates to a level to be unsafe at proper speeds ..........

Glad to know they are looking after our best interests ..... :smt009

Our club used to do evening runs round the back roads of |Dorset but had to give them up because the surfaces became so bad.

I live on a 30 that's an unofficial 50. They've put chicanes and bumps on it which just means that the speeding cars, buses and vans are hurtling straight at you instead of on the opposite side of the road...
