squishy clutch response

#1 Post by k1w1boy » Wed Mar 02, 2011 10:03 pm

... overnight I've ended up squishy clutch response, knotchy shifting between N, 1 & 2 on take off/landing, and short lever travel. I've adjusted my clutch 'technique' to compensate and I've ridden relatively fine all week, but it feels wrong. :smt011 I trawled through 4/6 pages of clutch-related threads, but now I'm being lazy and putting out my grubby paw for pearls of wisdom. FYI, standard little tar thimble of a reservoir - so black I can't see the fluid level; no (obvious) signs of leakage; apart from upshifting from standstill, downshifting to neutral and the clutch lever travel, no scary riding feedback.

Thoughts?

Fluid leakage?

Old fluid that needs changing?

Fluid level dropped so far you've gone and pumped air in there?

We'll start with those suggestions and when you've eliminated them we can think of a few more options ....

naff fluid or a leak. :smt001
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handle bars to the saddle.

After my experience in the middle of the French Alps, my vote is air in the system

... By today the clutch master cylinder was noticeably, well, empty bugrit. Very unpleasant shifting - especially trying to get neutral. Because I'm a mechanical idiot, I took it to the shop and once I showed my oap spannermonkey where the slave cylinder was, I got topped up and bled and am fine for the moment. Will see if I lose any fluid tootling round this weekend and decide what to do next. Guessing it's a leak coz the handlebar reservoir was empty within 5 days of the initial squishy feeling :smt011

did your six million dollar man leave you? - maybe he was tired of being treated like an object? Oh no! You didn't roll up his rubber sleeve and expose his 'bionics' in front of your friends did you? :smt016
