Exporting a motorcycle to NZ

Anyone done it?

Falco's seem to go for $6-$9k on trademe.co.nz... trying to decide whether to ship or sell my beloved falco

A few of my friend's used to do this as a living.. Shipping old bikes all over the world. I'll be seeing them tomorrow evening, so will let you know whats been said. :smt001
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handle bars to the saddle.

Bloke on another forum I frequent exported his Harley to NZ -
Even though my HD is in a container I thought I would share the strange route its taking on its way to New Zealand.
It was loaded into the container in Wolverhampton and taken to Felixstow. From there it went to Antwerp then St Nazier then after Holland and France it was off to Spain and Valencia. Currently its crossing the Med to Laspezia which is in Italy near Genova.
Where its going next is anyones guess I only know its due in Sydney on 21st December and expected in NZ on 3rd Jan.
It was collected from him in UK 22 Sept, shipped 22 Sept, and arrived in NZ 11 Jan. He kept us posted all the way on the "Harley World Tour"

That sort of mileage from a Harley without breaking down must be some sort of a record .....

Hey all

Yeah... maybe :smt005

Have job in place, filling in residency application now... as long as we pass medicals we'll be off.

I'd love to take the Falco with me... and fully intend to... but need to work out costs, how to prepare bike, how standard I should make it for inspections etc. etc.

Thats why I ain't been on too much recently... but bike is now back on road and loving every minute (ok, maybe not every minute... its too god damn cold for that!)

Someone worked out that it had done nearly 7.5 mph - not bad for a Harley!

Deffo take it with you.

I was fortunate enough to be relocated, but I had to pay for the bike separately. Since I had a container the incremental cost was much less than arranging separate shipping.

The cost of Falco's and bikes in general is mad, I wish I'd brought my old Suzuki too now. I think NZ is a bit more reasonable, but still steep, so If you can take it with you.

I set mine back to completely standard as you'll need to get it checked over to ensure compliance with NZ regs. You'll probably need to make sure it's spotlessly clean (I did) so I took the opportunity to get into the nooks and crannies when the after market bits were off.

I had to pay an import duty which was 10% of the shipping, shipping insurance costs and local book value. Came to about AUS$1,500. A couple of hunders dollars for the inspection, another $500 ish for the registration and roadworthy (MOT) then another $500 for insurance (Fully comp, but I've got that cheaper now, approx $300)

That's all for Aus, but check with the immigration and import people, I found them to be extremely helpful and only too happy to help.

Andrew with the Harley says.........
All I can say really is the obvious, make sure the bike is steam cleaned and has no debris on it especially flies and seeds. It is worth the effort to ensure that it is spotlessly clean.

With documentation, the registration doc he should only send copies and keep the original to get the registation done here. The Warrant of Fitness will also be done at the same time. The receipt when the bike was bought which is proof of ownership again send copies and keep hold of the original.

Reporting it as exported is a must. Ensure its insured for the shipping. Check the company who do it keep to what they say they are going to do. When the guy from Street Bikes arrived to take mine I asked him if he was taking it back to be steam cleaned which was what had been agreed and he said not. I soon sorted that and it was done as it should have been just don't take anything for granted.

Thats about it really if he has any other questions send them to me, mine goes for registration tomorrow fortunately I have a friend with a trailer to get it there but every other person here has a trailer.

It has been easier than I thought it would be, so far!!

K'in oath!

I see you people buying Falcos for 2500 quid (under $4k Aus dollars). The shops here want AU $8000 and up for the same bike.

To make you cry, I paid AU $16500 for my Falco.... (I really wanted a Benelli TnT Cafe Racer, but it was going to cost AU $26500!!)
It's the V-twin thing. There's just something about it that inline-4s don't have at all, and V-4s don't have enough of.
