BT Infinity

#1 Post by paddyz1 » Sun Dec 26, 2010 8:53 am

Anyone got this yet? We are getting it on the 5th Jan.
Its supposed be BT's own fibre optic broadband service and they are claiming that my area boasts 28 meg download and 6 meg upload (assuming i am connected to something similar).
It will not cost me anything extra as i am already a customer and they will come and fit/setup for free.

Has anyone got any reports for this and are they happy with it?

Been waiting for it in my area but i've given up on waiting now as theyre more likely to have to fully upgrade our exchange before they can go for that.

Ive not seen any results from people I know but if it's like the rest of BT's service, it will be nothing short of a miracle (to get a decent speed).

Just had a quick shooftie at the BT forums, seems there's just as much discontent with the Infinity as with Total BB..

I take it you are some distance from your exchange, Paddy?

makes me laugh.
there are people a couple of miles away who can't get any Broadband.
What about BB for all before speeding it up for the few?

agree with BT just getting their act together on normal service....

Just before xmas I sent them a recorded delivery letter saying they had broken our contract by their poor service.....

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Years ago - can't rememeber how many now! - all our roads were dug up to lay cables for broadband - nothing ever came of it though!

As far as i know i am some distance away but don't know how far.

As for service through BT, I have to say it has been the best yet for us and we have been with them for 5 years now. We had a small break when sky broadband came out and we moved over to them. The first 3 routers did not work so i got rid and came back to BT. Had Had AOL, Tiscali and sky befor that.

I'm of the belief that most of these broadband companies are much of a muchness so opted for BT on the theory that they still own all of the actual cabling so if you have a problem with the line then they can deal with it directly instead of passing the buck to someone else.

Touch wood, apart from some initial problems (which required a new line from the exchange to be connected to the house and was dealt with reasonably quickly), everything is ticketyboo. The free Openzone/BT FON hotspots are an added bonus as well.

Im with bt total bb too. Only stayed with then because when i tried changing earlier in the year to.. talk talk?.. they messed about so much I just decided sod it. and stayed with BT. Better the devil you know. Bt are constantly under achieving and over proclaiming as to what they can deliver. We're a fair bit away from the exchange which does affect performance. In fairness to TT, they did state there was no cat in hell's chance they could get near BT's advertised levels of service.. mainly because neither could BT, but they wouldnt lie about it.

The fact BT own the lines does also keep me with them. when I was experiencing probs before with them, they eventually (try after 7 months of complaints and requests for BB help) changed the line into the house.. which helped a little. It was the original from about 1960, which explained why my system kept showing faults and slow BB!!
It's still slow now but Ive given up chasing it. Im just waiting til i get posted then go with Sky or O2 instead.

I've been with O2 for about 3 years.. They've done me well and never let me down. I had a problem a few weeks ago which meant I was without a BB connection for about 12 hours, which isn't bad compared to my dad having the same problem and having to wait for 3 weeks! He's with BT, and IMO they're a waste of fookin space. Those who say "i've never had a problem with them" probably haven't had to call customer services.. Based in India and a total nightmare.. Their 'ping' check they ask you to do to their server is infact a ping from the PC to the local router. Total waste of time as we already know that's fine! My dad isn't very technologically minded, so he went along with what they said. Being my dad, he wrote everything down what they asked him to do.. It wasn't until I went through it and noticed, that they were actually trying to say it was a problem with his PC rather than a line fault. After a round of fucks with the call centre muppet it all got sorted out. Turned out it was an exchange problem.. Same as what mine was.

I've looked around for better/faster broadband services, and O2 are still coming out top's. They may not be the fastest or the cheapest, but they're second to none on quality of customer satisfaction. The UK call centres are a massive help! :smt002

Been with Zen for about a decade. Service has been 1st rate.
On the odd occasion I have had probs with my line a call to Zen has had BT jumping thro hoops.

I started out with Freeserve which became Wanadoo and then Orange. Never had any real problems so I've stuck with them. From time to time it's got a bit cranky and slow but just when I'm wondering if I should chage they sort it out and I'm happy again.

I agree with the bit about the foreign customer services, however, you can't blame them for checking the customer's hardware setup first. I suspect that in many cases this is where the problem lies as many people (myself included) haven't got the first idea about how these things work they just plug it all together and hope for the best - as with mechanical and electrical problems, the first thing you check for is UI (user incompetence). I have yet to have any break in the service, unlike Virgin who I was with before which was constantly going down and customer services is a premium rate number which never answers particularly quickly unless they are selling you something.

Just my experience but so far so good, and as previously mentioned the free openzone is a bonus, especially if you are away from home a lot (or are getting near your download limit at the back end of the month :smt003 )

The thing with BT was they were constantly doing the local checks.. They didn't do any sort of line tests and didn't sound too bothered about getting it sorted.. Pretty poor service.. (More so when the same problem with O2 was sorted in less than a day. I was impressed with the tests and instructions they gave.. They could even see what my router was doing.) You would think an organisation as large as BT would be able to get problems sorted out pretty quickly. The way they treated my old man was out of order.. They made him out to be a complete dunce, when it was infact their problem.
