Cast iron bar?

#1 Post by MartDude » Mon Dec 06, 2010 8:29 pm

Anyone on here use cast iron bar? I'm after two lengths, 465 mm. long, x 25 - 30 mm, square or round

Or I think I am; perhaps someone more metallurgically-informed could suggest alternatives.

Our multifuel stove is an obsolete model (though only 11 years old), and needs a new grate. The manufacturers haven't been very forthcoming with info as to whether a grate from their current range might fit. I've just bought 2 of these, to use side-by-side, being dimensionally the closest I could find.

I need 2 (or more??) bars to support them, in a material that will withstand the heat and corrosive fumes from smokeless fuel.

Grateful for any suggestions

Ta

If you find a piece of steel/cast iron that fits where it needs to go, I can cut a grate pattern in it for you using the waterjet.

Thats if you can't find an alternative. :smt001

Thanks for the replies, chaps. A friend here has a water-jet cutter, and could do this for me, but I'm told that ordinary mild steel plate wouldn't last very well. Can you buy cast plate? Or is there some other type of steel that would be more durable than mild? Overall size is 465 x 370

Mild steel will be no good. I'm pretty sure you can buy cast plate.. Will have a word with a customer tomorrow who knows all about this sort of thing. Whats the thickness of the plate? :smt001

18 mm.
Very grateful for this, Will.

Now, if a wooden grate would work, I could sort this out easily . . .

It's a Yeoman Tudor

Had a replacement grate a few years back from a local stove supplier - might as well have been made of spaghetti - buckled and cracked very quickly - very poor quality material

What about something in machined titanium? Add a bit of bling to the stove.

I do know that the only sensible material for making heat exchangers for modern condensing boilers is good quality stainless. Everything else rots through pretty quickly. Not sure how that relates to solid fuel though.

I know some stove flues are made of 904 grade stainless, I guess that would cost a fair amount to make a grate from?

Will - thanks ever so. No immediate panic, as I've got those two smaller ones on the way - but could do with some advice on what to use as a support for them (original post) - perhaps use bits of the original, knackered, grate? But it would be grate to have something that fits properly and lasts.

Nooj - like your thinking, but then I'd have to get titanium pokers, shovel etc to match, and perhaps a carbon fibre bucket.

Stainless - nice thought, but hugely expensive. And what grade?

Some disabled people are just a bloody liability out on the public pavements, not because of their disability, just because they're idiots.

So, is this just a random thought or, just maybe, is it the wrong thread? :smt003
The ride is the reason ........ the destination is just the excuse.
