Chain length

#1 Post by MartDude » Thu Oct 07, 2010 9:35 pm

I'm posting this on behalf of a friend & neighbour, a refugee from RSVZone (and yes, I have been grooming him for RS).

He's fairly new to Aprilias, having acquired a '00 Mille a couple of months ago.

He's fitting new sprockets & chain, and would like to know : with 17T front and 44T rear sprockets, is the standard 108-link chain long enough, or should he go to 110?

Thanks

Hmmm Falcos are 16/41 as standard and a lot of us run 15/41 or 16/43 (a few running other combos)

So a Mille running 17/44 is a bit outside my experience .... and I can't remember what the standard length of our chain is in order to have a stab at working it out.

He's prolly ok with a 110, but I'd go for 112 to be on the safe side.

Yup, just buy a full length one and chop to suit.

Thanks, chaps. I'll pass that on

BTW, just out of interest, why would the P.O. have changed the chain & sprockets to 520 pitch (Phil's going back to 525)? Making a little more space for a 190 tyre?

It won't make any more space for the tyre - the inner edge of the chain will be in the same place.

It's done to reduce weight - though the figures Ben posted up recently showed that he didn't save much from the 520 chain but made the real gain by going to an ally rear sprocket.

Got rsv swinger on my falco, and use 16:44 sprockets. Have 112 link chain, but by the look of it, you could use 110
Hope this helps!

Well, since I posted the question, he's changed his mind & gone for 16-44. I gave him my old (108 link) chain from the Fut so he might better gauge the length, & he reckons that's long enough - tho' it's quite stretched. And I've passed on your replies. He's ordered a 108, and I can't help thinking he might be asking me to post up a 108 chain in the For Sale section very soon.

Many thanks for your input, guys.

yes .... being as the chain has to be joined anyway on the mille, getting a long one and cutting off what you don't need is by far the safer option !

Just noticed this post.. DOH! I also would've said get the longer one and cut to size. Don't need any fancy chain splitters or riveters to shorten a chain. :smt001
