New rider, new owner, not new bike.

Hi, new to the forum, biking, Falco's and just about everything else. Sold my car a couple of months back and got a TL in part ex, so decided to get started on two wheels. Last month managed to get a 00 Falco at a very reasonable price, and have already started the modding. I've had a spin on it, and despite being a very new rider, I can't believe how comfortable it is, and how stable it feels even in the pouring rain! So far I have the following:

Öhlins rear shock
Virtually new Brembo wheels in gold
Carbon fibre front mudguard
Refurbed Showa forks (worked out cheaper to get them than sending the old forks away to get refurbed)
New mirrors
New reservoir caps
Titanium wheel nuts
Rear hugger
New sidestand(better one of course)
Smoked screen
Crash bungs (upper, lower and front fork)
Clear rear indicators and clear brake light lenses
Heated grips
Lower fairing

Got alot to fit of work to do over the next month! I have looked through the forum, but am a bit confused as to which linkages I need for the Öhlins, if I need any?

Are there any other bits that would be recommended? At the moment there are a set of Motud cans on with the baffles still fitted. I would like to go to a single can in the future though

do what you have already ordered

ride it

see what others have done - then make the bike yours :) but take your time
(you have got a little beastie there - probably about 112 bhp now and will pull 150+ mph)

be warned we are very good at spending drinking vouchers...... very very good!

oh - tail tidy ?
airbox or filter change

re ohlins - what colour is it? a photo will be specific to id it.....

Spending money on making it my own is a good option, ALOT cheaper than doing my car! I am going to have a sit down, and have a look at fabricating a tail tidy over the winter, and see where that gets me.

The shock is a yellow spring Öhlins from a 2000 Mille R stamped with 62901 on the collar.

If it from a 2000 mille. I belive it will fit with your standard linkages. I think the linkages changed in 2001 when they stopped using the "white spring" sach jobbie.
But wait till someone else can confirm this though

Welcome Falconihlist, think you've made a good choice of bike there, but we're biased on here.

Where are you located, you may be near someone, to pick up some ideas.

And Tommy Nooooo - you're talking about the SACHS shock colours (as I suspect nursie is). The Ohlins are all the same colours.
However if it is from a 2000 MilleR it is probably the worst year that it could come from as I seem to remember they changed over during that year. This does make it more dificult as if it came off an early Mille then it needs Falco linkages but if it came off a later (2000.5 to '03) it needs the corresponding Mille linkages.

All that said, I think the spring rate printed on the spring should answer the question (unless it's been re-sprung).

Yes, further to what D-Rider says, find the Ohlins code printed on the spring and someone here should be able to decode it and decide what spring rate you have. Once that's done, we'll know whether you need RSV trianges/dogbone or not.

Welcome to the forum Rob

You seem to have got off to a really good start already.
Right bike (eventually), right colour and a whole load of mods planned already.
Like has been said already if the Ohlins shock is from a 2000 it should be OK with the standard Falco linkages. It would be a good idea to check the condition of the linkage bearings whilst you have them off.
Just a (nanny) word of caution, the Falco has got a lot of poke for a first bike and will grunt from low revs, so can wheelie off the throttle in 1st and 2nd. It is also a bit of a handful when doing U Turns or tight turns at slow speed, so slip the clutch a bit and this will help.
Gradually build your confidence with the bike using lower revs at first. The Falco will go bloody quick just using up to 6k revs so it is still great fun.
You also really need to understand and use counter-steering with the Falco, so try to get used to this as soon as you can.
Main thing is to just get out on the bike, and get yourself accustomed and enjoy the bike.
Also assume every other road vehicle is out to kill you and treat them with care. You will be surprised how invisible you are when riding a bike!

(And damn glad I do not live north of the border - mininum price per unit?? would make my current applejack more expensive than whiskey)

Just got home and got the shock out of the box. The number on the spring is 1093-54/140 350 so hopefully that is from a sub 2000.5:) would make life easier if it is just a matter of swapping out the shocks. May order some new bearings anyways as it is all coming apart.

Have already found out that the bike is on the responsive side, so I will definitely be taking things very easy, especially with the tunnel visioned drivers about. Wouldn't mind an armoured escort for route clearance.

Does anyone live around the Camberley area?
