Am I going mad ? Where has my preload all gone

#1 Post by yellowasp » Sun Aug 29, 2010 4:35 pm

Not being able to sleep last night I decided to print off the manaul, inparticular the suspension settings.

Now I may have had one or two drinks but the front suspension standard settings say that I should have 5 rings showing , sorry just read it again and it says 5 notches ???

WTF and I looking for , rings or notches :smt017

I am used to seeing rings and I cannot see any but I was informed that these forks dont use rings. Is this right ?

Can anyone tell me the amount of notches / rings clicks or whatever my preload on the front should be as standard. Also the damping and rebound clicks, turns or whatever that is.

Looking at the rear blue rubbish spring suspension , it looks wound all the way down. Howfar down should it be as standard ? I know I should change the shock but thats a job for a later day.

I just need the standard settings to start with and can then adjust from there.

thanks for your help in advance.

I think I know how to do it all. The problem is I would like to set the bike up back to factory standards and start from there. I suppose I could start with setting static / rider sag and all that but most factory settings are near the mark and would like to start from there. I just need the standard settings from factory.

Is it true about the forks ? No rings ? I suppose it is as there are none showing on mine and I can't beleive the previous owner would wind them right in. If it is true then how do you judge where they are now other that starting from being completely wound in and then rewind them. And there is my point. Is it a click, notch, or just so many turns to get the preload to standard settings.

What forks do you have?

If you have the gold forks like mine - you can't see any rings - it's all internal
I don't know what the stock settings are though - I just adjusted them so it was comfortable
There are no clicks or notches or anything

Regarding the damping settings - I keep them to the middle of each settings (one and a half turns out each) Full range is 3 turns

so many questions.....do you still have the standard shock on...... Horror I know but thats is whatz I have

I dont know if the gold marcozzi forks have different settings to the black showa ones. So I left mine mid-way on both (which im lead to believe is the stock showa settings)

No idea about max turns or the standard preload, I just twiddled them till it felt nice (ooooooo errrrrrr) I'll have a look what mine are set on tomorrow for ya if ya like

I scrapped the standard shock after 6 months of owning tha falco- got on early RSV ohlins one. And my god its lovely. No more wallowing about etc. Its a bit hard as im a feather-weight so probably need to adjust something. But definatly bin the old shock. I'm a pretty slow rider to be honest, and even I can tell you the stock shock is a pila a shite :smt005

You can't tell which forks by the colour.
Both black and gold Showas were fitted and, likewise, both black and gold marzocchis.

Easiest way to tell is to look at the fork tops. Showa preload adjusters screw in and out whereas marzocchis just go round and round with all the action taking place inside the fork tubes. I've posted pics of both types several times on here and AF1.

The manual was written with showas in mind.
The position of the adjusters is not relevant anyway - you use them to set up your sag so that's what you need to measure.
(for pumping up tyres we measure the resulting pressure rather than counting the number of pumpfulls we put in ... it's a similar thing turn the adjusters and measure the sag)
