new broomstick

#1 Post by Aladinsaneuk » Wed Aug 25, 2010 10:59 am

for assorted reasons young jadaris wants to trade in her existing broomstick and get a car

therefore i would welcome pointers of what type of car to look out for

so - budget of 2000 to 5000

engine under 2 litre

4 or 5 door

petrol

apparently must have a cd player....

not to physically big

I am biased - if it is not german or scandinavian i tend to turn my nose up!

Am fairly sure that BMW would not be right, but thinking VW/Audi/Skoda or volvo to start with

is there something else to add to the list? I have very little knowledge of the daewoos etc but woill consider most things :)

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Is this with the Stab-Action-Screwdriver-Volume-Control system or is she after something more conventional this time.

Toyotas, Mazdas and Hondas should not be ignored - my preference being for the first two on that list.

..... and why petrol?

..... and, of course, the thing that's bound to be her most important requirement ..... what colour is she demanding?

My wife has a Mitsubishi Colt and absolutely loves it.
She got the 3 door which looks a bit more stylish, but 5 door is the practical one.
We managed to find a nice black one with alloys, air con, cream leather seats and FSH, 3 years old with just 10K on the clock for under £4k.
Reliable, economical and very easy to drive and park.
Both models have sliding rear seats which offer massive leg room or bigger boot options.
Have a look on Auto Trader and check prices.
They do 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.5D versions. Terri's is the 1.3 and is quicker than I expected.

Agreed about Nissan Almera.

Cheap to buy run and insure, reliable, have CD players and chain driven cams, not shitty cambelts. highly recommended

Anything after 2002 and about a 1.4cc engine. That way she should get £35 road tax for a year. Daughter has a 206 1.4 TD. Nippy little thing, cheap to run and cheap road tax.

Gill's had 2 Fiats - Punto, & currently a Panda. Both reliable, easy to drive, well-laid-out inside, and reasonably economical

But you have to change the lettering on the boot so it says Skoda Labia.

I'm assuming the estate version is the Fabia Majora?
