Web site address or company Address please

#1 Post by fastrider » Wed Jul 21, 2010 7:14 pm

Hi all,

I want to purchase one of those USA Sidestands, but cannot seem to find a link to anywhere that sells them. On emailing AF1, they sent me a link to Roadracing World Magazine, but I can't find anything on the sidestand.

I looked on ebay.com and could not find any sidestands for Aprilias.

My engine keeps dying when I put it into 1st gear, thus I think the switch may be buggered, am currently in the process of stripping it down right now and I think the little plastic ping may have gone bye bye.

The current sidestand is from another bike, which I think may be a VTR but can't reliably confirm that. Bought it off one of the guys on here a couple of years ago now, but it still does not lean over enough and I have to very careful where I place her.

Does anyone have an address or link so I can purchase one please.

Mmmmm - I got mine from AF1. :smt017

E-mailed Mica, he sent details, I ordered via e-mail and it arrived 5 days later AND they even put "Replacement Spares" on the documentation so Mr Customs didn't take his cut

Try shorting pin 1 and 3 in the switch - paper clip will do it

And I would suggest the bubseywoo sidestand

Took the stand apart and yep, no sign of any pin there now, was going to do the drill hole and fit bit-o-wire bodge, but got no pics of where the plastic lug was to make exactly sure of correct position.

Need bike ridable by this Friday morning, so prob best best is short the pins as Aladinsaneuk said. Only now I gotta find a link/pics of where exactly these are sited (under seat?).

(I did have loads of these mods n stuff logged away on my drive over the years, but just when you REALLY need the info, you can't bloody well find it.
- Bit like my damn passport, lost it in the house for 4 years [after putting away in a safe place so I wouldn't lose it], wife kept nagging she wanted to go on Holliday, filled in lost paperwork/booked interview with passport office, had another massive clearout in the house, lo and bloody behold - FOUND one now out of date bloody passport. :smt013 )

Will re-visit AF1 and try again with the US sidestand option.

Thanks for replies chaps, mucho obligeeo

Yep, now found the old pages from the AF1 forums - point to

http://home.comcast.net/~sl_mille/

As for the lump of raised plastic, afraid to say its all gone...... but with the help of the pics on the link above for the sidestand switch, I should now be able to locate the correct section and fit something as a temp replacement.

Thanks for replies, much appreciated.

Didn't realise that the sidestand was the problem initially, as every time I rotated the stand the dash light would operate perfectly every time. The engine dying when put into 1st gear suddenly appeared 2 weekends ago, I was on my home from a rally and stopped at Oxford West (I think) service station, filled up, fired her up, selected 1st gear and DOH, engine stops dead.
Tried several times to no avail. Pushed her to the side, checked the sidestand was working (not sticking or stuff not rotating - all looked fine).
Checked the Clutch fluid, opened up reservoir, small hiss of pressure escaping when opened, very small movement of fluid when clutch pulled in gently... all good. Sealed reservoir back up, started bike, 1st gear and NO Problems..... :smt017

Set off (wasn't going to stop again now), got half mile up motorway and up to motorway speeds, suddenly engine dies (felt like fuel starvation or old style carb icing), Engine then suddenly restarts itself due to current
road speed acting as a bump start, within seconds it did it again, so I dropped down a gear, engine re-ignites and from that point on NO more dramas. One other point was that the temp reading for last couple of weeks or so was reading in the 80/90C range when it used to be 69/70C.
But from the point of opening the clutch reservoir and the bike dying on me twice, it suddenly dropped back to 70C. :smt012

Anyhow, just had the bike serviced and picked her up today, and everything seemed fine, until I pulled into my drive and the damn bike
died again. THAT'S when I suddenly thought it MUST be the sidestand switch. :smt021

So now onto it....

Cheers all.

Understandable because the light and kill circuits are separate - thats why you have 3 wires not 2

+1 the bubseywoo stand, fitted one a few months ago now, just a bit of a bugger fitting the spring back on but imagine you'll have that with any stand

Had same problem with broke plastic pin so was a bit of trial and error finding the location, used a very small screw and ground the head down to fit inside the hole

I fitted a VTR firestorm stand and whilst it was an improvement I want to improve the lean angle and it's general stability so may buy one of these busbeywoo stands. A quick eBay search yields item number 150470187513... is this the correct one? Does the standard switch work with this one?

Another issue with mu current VTR stand is that it swings very far forward and I'm sure it's begun to bend!

Yes, I did mine a couple of months ago, just watch the plastic pin doesn't snap off otherwise you'll need a DIY replacment, peice of wire, srew, bike spoke nipple etc

Didn't look up the number but if it's the seller 'bubsywoo' he only does the one for the Falco, the stand bit is a like for like replacement...but mile better

there were posts on here or AF1 showing the bike straight on comparing this and the standard stand

When you email him, make sure he's got some in stock, he has a batch then when they run out he gets the factory to make another batch so he doesn't make them himself[/quote]

just in case there is anyone who does not know, the sidestand switches fitted to the later Falcos have metal pins and don't suffer this failure - so replacement switches should be good too.

Thanks all for your help, especially as I have not been on here for quite some time now.

Anyways, I have now stripped the stand, removed the other make I had on (VTR ????), and have put the original back on. BUT.....

When I retrieved the original stand from its box and checked it closely, I found to my dismay a small bit o' plastic in the stands hole. Well blow me down with a feather.... if it didn't turn out to be the plastic tab!!! :smt013

So I have been riding round last 24mths or so with a cut out switch working perfectly on a different side stand without a pin hole or pin for that matter...what gives.... :smt120

So I did the drill a hole and fit a pin bodge job thingy....
Hmmmm Guess how long this took me.... about 2 bleeding hours that's what :smt093
Cut the tip off a metal skewer and gently hammered it into the plastic, and chucked a good dollop of Super Glue in for good measure. Then went to try and fit the switch back......
Damn thing would not fit, as the metal ping was obstructing the fit with the sidestand bolt. So I had to remove said pin and hammer it back in at a slightly different angle.
Managed to get the switch bolted back on, tested the operation of said switch, and now all seems to work fine. :smt001

But, one thing that now REALLY scares me is, I put the bike down off the paddock stand and onto its sidestand, OMG, I nearly crapped myself from seeing the lean angle on it :smt091
It is looking seriously over balanced on the sidestand side itself, and I am dreading parking up at work and walking away from it for fear of it falling over :smt009

I am most definitely going to buy a USA sidestand now, although I have a mate who does welding for relaxation, (an engineer by trade, built his own trike), and he has offered to sort the sidestand out with some cutting and welding etc, so may take his offer up when I go to his clubs rally.

So, what have I learnt from this so called easy little job....
That I ain't no bodge job expert, or mechanic. Keep dropping and losing vital bits of things and spending 10 mins hunting round the floor looking for the stuff again. :smt018 :smt102

I'd suggest removing the switch altogether and bridging the outside wires at the connector and putting the other stand back on until you get the US stand.

A BIG difference with the US stand is its a hellava lot bigger diameter which makes for a VERY rigid stand
