Bad Fuel

Over the last few days a defective batch of Petrol is being sold in the South East and South London.

There are reports from various Citroen, Land Rover, Mercedes, SAAB and Vauxhall dealers of cars suddenly starting to run rough and stalling a few days after refuelling, far too many to be coincidental. In each case it was found that Lambda Sensors had been coated with a deposit from the fuel which renders them unserviceable.

The long term affect on the catalysts has not been explored.

Sources of this fuel has been identified as Morrisons, Asda, Tescos and Total over the last 10 days.

So beware.

Gio, what's your source of info for this? Do you have a link that tells us any more?

I've done a quick search and not found anything yet - I think we could do with further details so we know what we should be looking out for / avoiding.

Yes, I'd like to know where you got the info - I've seen reports before that supermarkets were selling poor fuel but they turned out to be toptally unsubstantiated. Prolly started by the owners of non-supermarket filling stations.

I make a point of not using supermarket filling stations to fill the bike for this particular reason. The best quality fuel that this country produces is exported for profit and cheaper poorer quality fuel is imported in its place. This is the rubbish fuel which is provided at the cheaper outlets. You can smell the difference IMHO it smells like some kind of detergent. Whatever happened to petrol smelling like petrol?

I had a diesel car and the diesel at Asda just doesn't smell like proper diesel.

It's probably all additives anyway.

I'll continue to use super unleaded in the bike ta very much but I'll still fill the car with any old fuel. An occasional squirt of redex helps too.

I got it off a friend, he bought petrol at an Asda garage and he got missfiring problems.

He'd been told by someone else that there's a lot of it about.

Here's more.

Tesco in Addlestone and Brooklands have sold dodgy fuel I know 3 people (one is my next door neighbour) whose cars have been acting very strangely after being refuelled.

Thanks Fausto - that's what we needed.

Rather worrying!

I remember reading something in Autocar (don't worry - I don't buy it -we get it at work) that before long they are going to reformulate our fuels (I think to make them "greener") and that they would be adding ethanol. The concern expressed was that this could knacker fuel economy.
I can't remember the detail but I'll see if I can find it and scan it in or something.

In view of this, it's rather worrying if they suspect that it's ethanol that's causing the problem!

Bloody hell,

I just got the Lambda (sp) sensor replaced recently, hope it doesnt get buggered again cost over £200.

My local Tesco had Diesel put into the wrong tank last year but they held up their hands and paid for all the damage that was caused.

I always keep my fuel receipts this would help if problems arose over fuel.

There was an article published a year or 2 ago that shows that 'per vehicle road mile' emissions have decreased by about 25% since 1990. What this government and all others fail to point out is there are about an extra 30% of vehicles on the road.

Those with a Cat should.

Apparently they think it may have been a ship based problem. Some Tw@t not cleaning out the ship's hold prior to carrying fuel.
