Gabro Chip and Renegade Airbox

#1 Post by Martin » Wed Jun 09, 2010 11:03 pm

.
Well, seeing as I'd lifted the tank and stripped the airbox off to change the plugs thought I'd spend some more money on the bike...

Have sent an email to Southern Cross and also to Gabro regarding availabilty and price of a Renegade airbox and custom chip respectively.

I THINK I'm going about this the right way.... any pointers welcome.

Have asked Gabro whether I should get the chip set up for my current setup (standard airbox / Wolf race cans) or whether I should go for the Renegade / Wolf race cans set up in the hope I will eventually get hold of a Renegade kit. Ideally I'd like the former option so that when I DO get the Rene kit (they seem rare) I could send the chip back to him for remapping but that seems too easy.... :smt017

I'd wait until you have your airbox and cans sorted out.

If you're running the std airbox, even with a free flowing filter, and open cans the std chip will work just fine. It'll still work with airbox mods, so why waste money.

Just my 2 worth.

hooked on rsvzone sells a new version of rene airbox

originals are rare - southerncross did have some but....

do all your mods then do the chip

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Thanks for the advice which, I have to say, makes sense.... it's good to get second opinions and this site never fails (Paypal donation to be made - honest)

I was looking at Hooked's product on RSVZone and it looks neat although I could see from the forum that he seems to have gone a bit quiet with respect to answering questions on the kit. Maybe I'll ask him anyway (and save myself a few quid) on the increasingly rare Renegade option.

Falcopops when you say "free flowing" filter I was under the impresion that the likes of K&N etc were pointless?

To be honest leaving the airbox unmodified but fitting a freer flowing filter would be my preferred option, if such a filter exists. Is that opening a can of worms? Good!

I do like my induction BAAAARRRRPPPPPPP though (my ZX6R in full on warp mode was addictive) :smt004

I fitted Beowulf titanium cans with the tiny legal baffles left in and fitted a K&N in the std air box some time ago. Worked fine and you could certainly feel the improved mid range. It also cleared the flatspot at just under 5k still using the standard "snipped" ECU. You also get more induction roar and the cans with baffles and filter combination was as loud as I want to go and legal. It is bloody loud and rattles windows as it is.
I know you can obviously get bigger improvements with bigger airboxes and a PC3 etc., but this worked well enough for me at relatively low cost. It's all down to you really, how many £££s you want to spend and how loud do you want to be.
The induction roar in my ZX9R is also very addictive but Kwack induction setups have a better sealed ram air system that really works at the top end, standard Falco air tubes are not sealed where they pass through the frame and the standard airbox is not really big enough for a ram air effect. When people have tried sealing the gaps around the frame it does not seem to have made any difference
Does still sound better with a K&N though if you can't afford an airbox swap!
