Punctures

#1 Post by Thumper » Tue Feb 27, 2007 8:42 pm

Now before anyone mentions Ultraseal, I really wanted to know about repair kits rather than gue.
Seams to be plenty of different types on the market, I bought one from Hien Garick about five years ago, I have used it a couple of times getting other people out of bother. When I recently used it myself I found the remaining rubber bungs had perished, :smt013 not surprising really after five years.

So before I order a new one what if any do you guys recommend, having actually used one of the kits.
I am about to order a kit made in Europe by GRYP it uses no glue instead has a soft round tacky strip, I assume it hardens with contact with the air or heat.

Good thread Thumper - the last time I mended a puncture on my bike, I was just patching an innertube - so I'm really interested in finding out what I should carry with me on the Falco.

However, I'm somewhat baffled by the thread title .... you didn't mean "Punctures" rather than "Pictures" did you?

I'd never do an amateur glue and rubber grommet repir, carry a couple of innertubes if you must.

Yes I know they aren't recommended for radials but they will get you out of bother. :smt001

I thought it was illegal to fix zr-rated tyres? Another Euro-rule.

All of the diy kits are purely get you home measures AFAIK.

I'd only trust a properly done repair (from the inside) on a long term basis.

I have more faith in them than some of you, dependant on where on the tyre the puncture is.

I've been getting Z rated tyres fixed for ages at a local tyre shop. They advise you that it's not advised, but not that it's illegal.

They cook a patch onto the inside of the tyre, never had any problems.

A properly repaired tyre is safe but I wouldn't race on it, as for slime in the tyre it has it's uses and I would consider it on a dirt bike.

I have told this story before I'm sure, I bought a good used car that had been well looked after all the tyres looked good.
It very nearly killed me when a front tyre blow out.

I subsequently found out the previous owner had the tyres filled with slime as he towed a caravan. The blown tyre had a number of punctures. in fact two of the remaining tyres had at some time been punctured and sealed themselves with slime, one of these remaining tyres was in danger of coming apart because of the number of holes in it.

Sorry not on a superbike :smt012
