new fella needing a Falco

#1 Post by zoidberg » Mon Jun 07, 2010 9:40 pm

chaps :smt006

i'm after a falco and have currently set my sights on a 2005 model which hopefully i'm going to look at this weekend.

What do i need to look out for?

I will order a new sidestand if i buy it. the rear shock has been replaced already.

What else do i need to be putting on my shopping list. I'm used to heavy clutches, so not too bothered about that.

What's the benefit of fitting a mille swingarm?

and also i'll be needing some cans to let it sound how it should.

i've seen some pipewerx ones on ebay are they any good?

and a new eeprom? where could i purchase of of these?

sorry for the inquisition.

thanks in advance

Dave

Hi and welcome Dave.

Guess it's 2005 registered - last ones were made in 2004 (mine's 2005 registered).

Swingarm mod - no practical benefit other than bling ... but it's good bling ...

First things first, forget all the other mods until you've:
  • 1) sorted out the sidestand
    2) sorted out a rear shock - Ah, just re read it - that's done then

Never come across Pipewerx cans - sorry

Chips ... well chips and/or PCIII

Chips vary - most only play with fuelling but the Renegade, Factory Pro and Gabro chips also adjust ignition timing.

Also heard good things of DrRossi chips but still not managed to confirm whether they play with ignition timing.

The usual I would say, plus from my experience if the bike struggles to start and needs jump leads - the battery will go soon.

Bubseywoo on ebay or US version (about 100 pounds)

What else do i need to be putting on my shopping list. I'm used to heavy clutches, so not too bothered about that.
I thought the clutch wasn't that bad but I've put a MPL slave on, noway I'm going back!

Some say it gives you extra 12bhp ;)

and also i'll be needing some cans to let it sound how it should.

Ohhh yeeess, and no idea about pipewerx
and a new eeprom? where could i purchase of of these?

Try Gabro on AF1

sorry for the inquisition.
no worries
thanks in advance

Dave

BHP, Speed and performance with the SL1000 is determined by colour.

Which colour are you looking to buy?

That's a touch racist is it not? especially coming from an employee of HRH.

Welcome Dave,

All your point's have been covered already, my tuppenceworth would be to wait until you've got all your performance mods in place before deciding on a chip, unless you go the PCIII route.

red & black :smt004

could someone be so kind as to compile a quick list of essential mods for me please :smt003

the priority will be that sidestand of course.

i had an RS125 when i was 17 and the sidestand was made of chees on that too.

every time the wind picked up i'd come out to the bike laying on it's side.

:smt011

and thanks for the welcome.

great site :smt023

This is a sticky in this area of the site, reasonable starting point.

welcome

may i suggest that you sort the sidestand - bubseywoo is probably easiest - around 50 quid

talk to the seller - find out the bike history - especially valve clearance che ks/shims

as for other mods - get it, ride it and look here - there will be lots that will interest you - and lots of different stuff....

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Welcome and great news on your bike choice :)

I'm relatively new here but ended up buying my Falco off a member here and have never looked back. Mine had the usual
mods, FP chip, rene air box, maxton rear shock and scorpion end cans - the problem I have is that I've only ever ridden a Falco with these mods and so cannot comment on what it's like without these!

Only thing I had to do ASAP was sidestand... got advice off here and ended up getting a VTR firestorm one and it does the job!

I've also done a few cosmetic things (tail tidy, exhaust hangers) and now my clutch slave seal is weeping I'm toying with idea of MPL and then braided hoses all round.

Anyway enjoy ur new purchase! Get your credit card ready!

Welcome to the site Dave. :smt006

Just the usual things to look for. (as mentioned by others already), as Falcos are very reliable if looked after and don't corrode as bad as most if used in winter, (I've run mine through six winters).
The Falco's big V Twin is not an easy thing to turn over, but mine has always started first time if the batttery is up to it. Take great care and if the battery is low charged, it as it can damage the Sprag clutch and cause dash resets with EFI displayed. Best to keep it on an optimiser of some sort then even an older battery should be OK for a while. If it does need a new one see the threads on here about batteries with a higher turn over capacity, which can be worthwhile)
As for cans, yes get some, but never heard of Pipewerx, I use Beowulf cans, as do a few others on here. They are fine with the standard chip if you leave the baffles in. They are bloody loud with them still in!
I fitted a K&N filter at the same time and they worked perfectly together.
Others have fitted Blue Flame and Fuel and they seem to work well.
I would fit a hugger early on to keep any crap off the shock.

Good luck with your search or purchase if you go for the one you've seen.
Only problem is they always say never buy the first bike you see, but you don't see many Falcos!

oh - look in for sale section - flying kiwi has just listed his falco....

and if you cannot find a rear hugger, then go for a shocktube - nooj is a dealer....
