MOT checks - rear reg light

#1 Post by arizonabay » Wed May 05, 2010 9:31 pm

With my tail tidy lost in transit from the German fella, I have decided to fabricate my own (without a reg light).

All the mot test notes/manuals I've checked say nothing specific about a rear registration light - they do however say you need a rear red reflector. Does anyone know for sure if the registration light is definitely required for an MOT pass?

Well, the buggers failed mine one year when the bulb failed and I hadn't noticed

There could be a difference between needing to be working if there is one, and needing to have one. :smt001

for a full mot you need a plate light

for a daytime only mot you don't

i use the led number plate bolts - about a tenner from evil bay

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Cheers for the replies.

I just called the mot test centre I have always used and they have confirmed that a number plate light is not required for a full mot pass. :smt003

hmmm

sounds like you have a good test centre - i have failed them in the past for a none working light....

from http://www.ukmot.com/1-1.asp

. With the side and rear lamps switched on, check that the rear registration plate lamp(s) is

(PASS) (FAIL)
a. fitted a. not fitted
b. working b. not working
c. does not flicker when tapped lightly by hand. c. flickers when tapped lightly by hand.

Interesting... not sure what is meant by "multiple number plate lamps" - but if the tester is happy, who am I to complain :smt002

I've not got one. Went through all MOTs fine
Mr MOT man said its a fail if your light doesn't work, but its not a fail if you don't have one

Isn't there a similar rule regarding spare wheels on cars?

no spare wheels do'nt come into it. unless you've got a space saver fitted for the test.

Mine doesn't have one and has passed without one for the last two years. Did it change when the new MoT's were bought in?
