Guess the engine

Mate had this in a couple of weeks back to make an exhaust for. Its a project bike for someone to show off their new business or something, cant remember what though :smt003

Royal Enfield Diesel. Think they were around 400cc and and about 15 - 20hp which returned near to 200 mpg!!

I always hated diesels until I got a high performance diesel car, and now I have been totally converted.
The 2.4 20 valve Alfa has 284 ft lbs at 2000 revs, which is more than a standard 911 and does nearly 50 mpg commuting.
I still find myself thinking what would a modern turbo diesel be like in a bike. :smt017
Even a Harley Tractor with a 1200 diesel with half that torque (140 ish ft lbs) would go like stink, (Literally being a diesel :smt003) and not be any more agricultural than the standard Harley with the same sort of red line.
Might also get near a hundred mpg.
Diesels don't have the sound or smoothness, so you would not really want a diesel sports bike, (we have V Twins for that. :smt002 ), but they do have the grunt and economy.

Yes, I was a late convert to diesels (in 4-wheeled vehicles) and wouldn't go back to petrol now. I've got a VW Transporter van with a 2.5 5 cyl TDi engine, and that returns over 30mpg even when cruising at 80 - 85 mph. And it really is as aerodynamic as a flying brick.

the next cage i buy will be a diesel i think. A friend of mine has a peugeot 406 estate thing.. 1.8 turbo diesel (i think). more power and better fuel milage than my 2.0 vtec honda accord. A tank full in the honda (£60ish) will get me around the 350 mile mark.. thats just general driving, not hooning it and not driving for economy. It's also an auto box which doesn't help matters, although it's not too bad as the last manual box accord i had was about the same..

Peugeot diesel engines are quality bits of kit. Ford have been swearing by them for years, as have many other firms.

I'd tried a few Peugeot diesels when on holiday and was impressed but the Alfa 20 valve 2.4 5 cylinder gives between 175 and 220 bhp, varied by just a different ECU chip, 220bhp is standard in the Brera.
The torque only varies between 284 and 286 ft lbs at 2000 revs.
Bit like a 4 wheeled Falco, and will outrun most things on 4 wheels from just above 1500 revs.
Current long term trip is at 47+ mpg over 1600 miles of commuting at an average of 23 mph, so in pretty heavy traffic during rush hours. Mixture of A roads, more country lanes then just heavy traffic for last 40% of journey. I can easy get 50 plus on a motorway at around 70 to 75 plus, drops into high 40s when start pushing 80 to 85. A steady rural run will get into high 60s.
It will do 140 top whack and 0-62 in 8 secs, but this is not what diesels do well, they are much better at rolling acceleration 30 to 60 or 70.
Just intrigued at what this sort of engine might be capable of in a bike.
Lets face it bikes are not very economical, I can get better mpg out of the Alfa than any bike I've had recently. The Falco and the ZX9R will get into the regularly get into the 40s but getting much better mpg is much harder on a 1000cc bike.
Wouldn't want a diesel bike for fun, but could make a brilliant long distance commuter or tourer especially with a 1200 engine with around 140 ft lbs of torque, (which is almost twice what bikes like the Falco or 9R have), coming in at something around 2K.

Before Mike got the tank, er sorry, Jag, he had a Citroen Xantia 2 litre turbo diesel - I loved it! Could feel the kick as the turbo cut in and then you were flying!

Just got back. Yes its a deisel - mated to a brit gearbox. He did tell me what the engine make was but all I can remember it was out of a generator.

And dont get me started about renault deisels. Got one in my vivaro and its a piece of shit, giving all sorts of error codes and tapping from the 2nd cylinder. Cheese eating surrender monkeys.

If its mpg you want, get a 1.0l petrol and convert it to lpg, dunno why its not more popular
