Firefox and the art of webspeed

#1 Post by Kwackerz » Sun Mar 14, 2010 6:35 pm

its been about for a while but im currently using the latest Firefox with the 'fasterfox' plug in.

Definately a quicker browsing experience and so far ive found no ills with using the slightly modded firefox.

Ive also done the obligatory websearch and changed a couple of other settings using the following:
Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

just thought i'd pass it on :smt001

Mine's a definate improvement over the firefox I was running before, even though that was already quicker than internet explorer and on par with google's chrome browser

Have you tried Opera Browser? I've used most versions of IE (from ver 3), nutscrape, chrome and even firefox in search of the best.. Can't beat Opera IMO. Try it.. you wont look back.

Also.. Had a look at the settings above in the Opera system and have made a couple of modifications. Pipelining was already turned on.. I've upped the number of hits though, so it's even faster now! :smt003
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handle bars to the saddle.

If you hadn't noticed already, you'll soon discover that Will is an evangelical zealot for Opera .... he speaks very highly of it but as I've been happy with Firefox I've not tried Opera yet.

That said, I have had a lot of crashes with the last version of FF I was using and was getting a bit pissed off with it (probably as I had several million tabs open TBH) but yesterday I upgraded to FF 3.6 so we'll see how that goes.

Not heard of fasterfox before ... might have to give it a go

(and yes I know it will be first to be hacked!)

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Your tweaks appear to have given my mouse a headache, it is constantly seizing for a few secs at a time. :smt017

Hmm I have no ills with mine. you had a look at task manager to see what's using up your system resources?

I suspect it is down to dwm combined with multi tabs, some on auto reload alongside your tweaks.
