VULTURES!!!

#1 Post by tommy » Wed Mar 10, 2010 3:49 pm

Right.
Got a big problem.
Just called my insurance company to declair ALL mods
They have refused to insure me

Apparently they dont mind one or two mods. But my bike is now "high risk"
So its gotta go back to pretty much standard (Just need some sort of clip on bars)

I will be putting my modded bits on ebay soon - bring on the vultures!!

Currently have:

Tuono bars and top yoke (I need some sort of clip ons)
Tuono headlight and carbon fairing with subframe
Renegade air kit (I need a new airbox and 'air boot' thing
Power commander III USB
Falco Fighter aluminium belly pan
Falco Fighter aluminium side fairings
SL carbon exhausts (ones a bit tatty)

not for sale:
RSV swingarm (Which will be staying on the bike)
Ohlins rear shock (Also staying on the bike)

All will be going on ebay in the near future as i need to get as much for them as possible

Let this be a lesson to everyone like me. Call your insurance company FIRST before you go buying shiny stuff!

Wouldn't it be easier just to find a different insurer? I declaired my mods and was told that it wouldn't affect the premium, but the add-ons would only be covered up to £1000 of damage.

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

They clearly don't realise that for a Falco, a list of mods as long as your arm is in fact standard.

Getting a bit worried with my renewal coming up if the are playing silly b@gg@rs.

Thing is, most of my mods are standard Aprilia parts - from the Mille-R. Why not just insure it in whatever is the higher category? .... but I guess that would just be too simple.

Think I might drop a suggestion to PB - they are the magazine that is probably the greatest champion of modding (sports) bikes.
Perhaps they could do a survey / report of the Insurance industry and their attitude to mods (and maybe try to talk some common sense into them).

Unfortunately Ben Wilkins doesn't seem to be with them now - I noticed that all reference to him was expunged from the latest copy.

My Falco was pretty well modded when I had it, with virtually all the mods that could be done (at the time)

I declared them all with no problems. Of course they were not covered value wise (in case of a total right off I would only get the market value of a standard bike) but the bike was fully insured. I sent them a photo of it to make sure they knew what the score was.

I'd try ALL the insurance companies if I were you. I also used Biketeam for insurance when I had the Falco and with al the mods thay had no problem insuring me. Bizarrely though they wouldn't insure the Tuono because it didn't have an alarm fitted! so I now use Adrian Flux

You might drop lucky if you try them all

Mine's due for renewal next week. Went to Go Compare and listed ALL my mods, came back with a quote of £183.25 Comp plus protected no claims with Bike Sure.

Left the mods off for another quote from someone else and got a 3rd F&T quote for £75!!!! Not bad for a 38y/o with 3 points and 9yrs NCD :smt003

Almost tempted to take that one and be very careful for a year.

Told them that the swingarm bars fairing etc were standard aprilia parts.
Their excuse is that now im "hi risk" as my bike is now a custom bike
Got a couple of quotes, but were extremily high even though i've 5 yrs ncb and a clean licence

To be honest, i was thinking of putting the bike back to standard(ish) anyway as I need to get some cash together for a flat, so im not to bothered. Just peeved at my insurance company

Bugger, I've put some oil in the bike, better tell the insurance company.

Aaaw, so want the belly pan, but it'd look rubbish on my fast red one!!!

Edit: Can't you just take them off until you can a) find a better in-sewer-ants company or b) get older?

I could take them off and keep them, but im happy to sell them as the money could be put to good uses. The aluminium bits are on ebay right now - will be interesting to see what happens

Im im lucky (and patient) i might get near a grand back on the parts (inc power commander and pipes etc)

Had the same hassle with plenty of insurers so was wondering who to use, but Bike Sure quoted no probs - all mods included.

Cheers Nooj.

I'll be interested in the PCIII. Can you PM me when it's for sale, or let me know how much you're asking. Cheers!
