870 miles in 2 days ?

#1 Post by Fausto » Tue Feb 20, 2007 6:46 pm

Hi all. I'm heading down to Antibes at the end of May and need to do it in 2 days on the Falco. Thankfully I will have a few more days for the return journey

It looks like 870 miles on Autoroutes most of the way.

Anybody done 500 miles plus in one day and was it practical?
I did the South of France to Ipswich in 2 days years ago on a Yamaha XJ550 so I know it's possible but I was (a lot) younger then!

I was hoping to get more than halfway on the first day so I could perhaps enjoy the more interesting roads in the south on the second.

What do you think?
It would be nice to think that 500 miles on Autoroutes should only take 5 hours :smt003

Last October I did 1243 miles in 2 days, was bloody hard work and all bar 250 miles was on motorways. your bike is faster than a GS1200 as well, so it should be a doddle.

The 250 miles was on roads up and around the swiss alps.

Hi Fausto,
A couple of years ago we went from Saint Quentin to Albertville, about 460 miles, in about 6.5 hours. It was mostly Toll motorways but a detour over some mountains aswell. We had no problems, the roads were great. stayed under the ton most of the way ( officer !) :smt002 The biggest head ache was fuel stops and I was on a Firestorm. Hopefully less stops on the Falco.

In June we are going from North Wales to Le Mans in a day, about 580 miles :smt119

i did 720 miles in a day, in a van, a week before xmas. didn`t start till lunchtime.
it was when i bought the Falco. drove down to newquay via brighton (to get van) to pick it up.
I couldn`t be bothered stopping so did it in one.
boredom was the biggest factor.
did zeebrugge to Munich on a bike in one day, about 550 miles, 8am start in by around 5pm.
I think if you stick it around 90 mph you make good progress, don`t have to fill up every 1/2 hr, and don`t tire as much. traffic abroad is quicker and the roads generally clearer.
make sure your pillion has a MP3 or something, to pass the time.

Also bear in mind the "lock you up and throw away the key" approach to speeding in France these days. Instant penalties / license confiscation if I remember correctly

Did 700 miles in a day, in a car, couple of years ago, piece of cake, 820 miles on a bike is a piece oof cake too, should even be able manage it in one day if you go for it.

I did 434 miles on the Falco when we met for the first rideoput into the Borders in 2005. That was with plenty of long stops. Set off about 7.30 and got home about 5pm. The ride was mostly twisty country roads with a spell on the A1 for about 20 miles. F9 and Tweaker will have done about the same mileage that day I reckon.

By the time I got home I was a little sore across the shoulder blades but thats all. 500 miles in a day is easily done I reckon

If you can manage (while riding) about 90mph, allowing for stops (fuel/breaks) your average will be about 75-80mph. When I came back from Italy I did Louhan to Calais in 5.5 hrs this included a stop of over an hour, that was an average of 72mph including the stop.

I was fool enough to ride from Berkshire to the Highlands vie Norwitch around 650 miles in one very long day. I think it took around 13 hours with stops, suffered with pills and stiff knees ever since but the falco didnt blink :smt003

That's all quite reassuring thanks. I was thinking it shouldn't be a problem. All my previous long bike journeys were done on 'upright' bikes which ought to be more stressful really. Far more windblast.

I'll be aiming for an overnight stop somewhere around Lyon so I can take the Grenoble - Gap - Grasse route at my leisure on the second day.

Anyone able to recommend somewhere to stay in the Lyon area ?

One of my department at work is from Lyon (he rides a Yamaha Diversion - poor chap).

He's lived in England for some while now but his folks still live in Lyon.

Unfortunately he's not in today but I'll try to remember to ask him when I see him next.

I have done a few trips to Scotland on my Falco and my old VFR. I find the Falco is easier than the VFR was to do the 400+ miles, and another 100 on top is do-able. And I'm getting on a bit - suffering aches and pains just watching telly!!!

So no worries, the Falco should eat it in comfort (relatively).

Enjoy the trip.

If you fancied somewhere near Louhan (about 60 miles north of Lyon) I can recommend a place :smt003
