First impessions of the ZX9R

#1 Post by HowardQ » Mon Jan 18, 2010 1:12 pm

Weather forecast was for a sunny day, so got up yesterday hoping to get out on one of the bikes at least, but the forecast for sun looked a bit iffy early on. Certainly no sun to be seen, heavy cloud, and looked like it may rain any time. :smt009
It eventually looked a bit brighter at going on for 2pm, so I thought I’d go for it even if I only got a short run. Not enough time to get out on both so I thought I’d have a first run on the ZX9R as needed to fill the tank up. Bit apprehensive as roads were still a bit damp and slippery with craters everywhere, (used to call them potholes, but way too big for that now!). First time on the bike and I’ve never had a proper ride on anything quite this quick before, (143bhp, 170mph plus), so took it really steady at first.
Things were made worse by the fact the gear lever is too low for me, was OK when I just sat on the bike in the garage, wearing trainers, but on the bike wearing nearly new SIDI boots that won't let me point my foot down as much, it’s very difficult to get it under the lever to change up, will sort later!
Shouldn’t have worried about the bike, instantly felt perfectly at home and very comfortable for a sports bike, it’s a big pussycat really. Well not exactly, but dead easy to ride, at the revs I was using, initially only up to about 7 or 8K. It pulls clean from not much above 2k and is a doddle to ride fairly slowly, (good old fashioned carbs perfectly set up!).
More comfortable than I expected, similar comfort to the Falco, with a bit more protection from the fairing, but has a lower screen so some buffeting around the helmet, (dark tint double bubble, shortly I think).
Bars are a fraction lower but a bit nearer. Also has a comfortable seat.
Low down kick of the Falco is not there at 4 or 5k, but this thing revs to 12,500 and probably doesn’t get on song until 8 or 9k, which was about as far as I got today.
First impressions are very favourable, nice easy ride at lowish revs, and anybody could ride it. Actually I reckon it’s easier to ride this way than the old CBR1000F which was pretty top heavy at slow manoeuvring speeds.
Will be very different when fully opened up, but that will have to wait for later, once roads are drier and gear selection is sorted.
Still can't get over the condition of it. Never really rated Kwack build anything more than average, but this thing is 7 1/2 years old with over 18K on the clock and there is hardly a mark on it. :smt001
So initial impressions are very good.

Not yet as it was dark late yesterday afternoon after I got back from the first run out and I'd washed the bike, so only took some flash pictures after. I will probably post a couple of them tonight when I get home from work and some better ones next weekend in daylight.

Nice bikes ZX9's. In my top two along with the Falco with bugger all to choose between them.

I found the 9 more comfy on a run, and the handling is easier at low speed due to it not being as top heavy. It hasn't got the bark through the airbox though. And the brakes are feeble in comparison too. Much easier to ride through built up areas due to having a nice smooth delivery. And once you get the taps opened properly prepare to hang on for dear life. :smt003

I reckon the Falco has better suspension and is a far more confident bike around higher speed corners. And it will leave the 9 for dead on the exit. The 9 will get you back on the straight but will then have to brake earlier for the next corner. So it'll be swings and roundabouts on a decent ride.

Just my opinion obviously. Truth be told I'd have both if I could afford it. The Falco because it's the best V twin, and the 9 because it's the best IL4. So you're a lucky bugger really ain't ya? :smt002

Early days for the 9R, but I think your comments might just be spot on about the two bikes.
Never want to get rid of the Falco but I bought it at 6k miles and is now nearly 30K so want something I can also use fairly regularly, maybe as often as the Falco to split the miles.
My 2001 Falco would probably fetch about £2K if traded in, (never will), and the 9R cost me £3k. I thought for about a millesecond about what bike I could get for £5k, and no contest, it had to be these two.
Don't think I could find two better bikes for me.

It was dark when I'd cleaned the bike after the ride, so took some quick pictures with the onboard camera flash, so not enough flash coverage really.
Not brilliant but here goes –

Nice looking bike Howard, so what's on the top of the mod list for it then?

I had a zx9r before the falco (hence the freen leathers, lol) great bike, only sold mine due to me missing v twin stomp. I remember first time i rode it, 2nd gear, opened the throttle, as soon as i hit the power band the front wheel left the floor and sent me power wheelying down the high street. Looked bloody cool - scared the fuck outta me though :smt003

What i found with mine though is keep the standard exhaust on. Or get a baffled road legal one if ya must. They seem to lose alot of mid range with a race pipe on unless you rejet the carbs. which is a bloody faff in my opinion haha :smt012

Here's my old one

Which double bubble screen was on yours Tommy?
That will probably be the first mod for me as the standard screen is quite low. Not found any info, yet on which work well or not, are are they all the same.
Were you happy with yours?
Did it make a difference?
Interesting comments about the can, Gary, (Kneescratch), has offered me a can nice Scorpion off his old 9R, but the carbs feel so well set up at the moment and very smooth. I had wondered how well they would work with a race can on without a full dyno set up. I am not bothered about any more power really. it's got enough off that, just that it is VERY quite compared with the Falco! Then again, you can air intake better.
You're right on the V/Twin stomp though, as noted earlier, I missed the torque hit at 5k or so. The Falco seems to have the best low down hit of any V/Twin I've been on, although others like newer RSVs and Dukes might have more higher up.

Hi Howard,

It looks spot on mate.

The can i have is a micron and on my zx9r which was balanced superbly it made no difference at all to the running.

Check your PM'S mate.

Im 99% sure it was a "Puig" screen. It came with the bike so i can't comment on how much better it was compared to the standard one

Thanks Tommy, it looks like a Puig name on yours.
It's just that there are big differences in prices for screens of identical shape, (all like the one on yours) -

Racesceens sell their screens at £35 delivered
Fabbri are £69 delivered
Puig are £75 delivered

Have a Skidmarx on the Falco which sell at £50 plus delivery.

All prices from internet sites. Don't mind paying top whack if it is a good product, but no experience of any of them other than Skidmarx personally, so just thought I'd ask.

Had a Puig on mine Howard and it made a big difference. Just a slight bit of buffeting around the top of the helmet at speed.

My second one was that colour too. I feel a bit sad now. :smt085
