NEW YEAR PHONE SCAM ?

#1 Post by D-Rider » Thu Dec 31, 2009 5:42 pm

I received a text today wishing me:

"Happy new year x"

Nothing strange about that you may think, but:
  • * No sender name
    * Phone did not identify the sender as someone in my address book
    * Phone number started +61
If I'm not mistaken, that's the country code for Australia .... wouldn't be surprised if replying is at some premium rate ....

Now it might be harmless but on a day where people tend to wish each other "Happy New Year" and maybe reply the same without stopping to look closely at the sender, I thought it might be worth pointing out ....

funnily enough, i had a missed call today - and when you called back it asked if you accepted the call and to press 1

needless to say i didn't!

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Someone on FB just pointed out that if you're not in the other person's phonebook, a text message doesn't say who it's from unless you sign it - something a lot of people forget at a time of year when they think of people they haven't seen for ages.
The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.

I got this too. Now the only person i thought it may be from in Australia was an ex lady colleague, so i sent one back saying Anita? Got a message back straight away saying Dale!

I think it was from Dale - Falcopops ......... or have I been scammed?

Ah I guess it could be ..... I've still got his old UK mobile number on my phone ..... don't think that one's much use to me!

Slightly worse for wear, I responded too.

Must admit after Andy indicated the possibility of a scam I thought for a while I'd probably made a mistake in responding. Turns out it didn't cost much and as I know Dale has my mobile, I'm also thinking it was Dale.
Don't put off 'till tomorrow what you can enjoy today

Once his hangover has subsided (probably another 3 or 4 days yet!) maybe Falcopops will reveal himself :smt103

T'was I indeed and this is the 1st time I've been able to get near the PC as my good lady wife hogs it all the time on face book (she's looking over my shoulder so I have to be nice).

I did mean to add my name, but texting while drunk is really really hard so I gave up early

LOL - we've been scammed by Falcopops (or just been rude by not replying)

Happy new year Dale .... I'll add your new phone number to my book!
