Fitting early model airbox snorkel and frame inserts ....

#1 Post by D-Rider » Sun Nov 08, 2009 1:30 am

Today I decided I was going to sort out the backfiring on a closed throttle on the over-run.
All I needed to do was wind the air bleed screws in a bit and make sure the TBs were balanced .... but thought I'd clean and gap the plugs first.
First thing I noticed was one of the plug caps was sat alongside its plug rather than on top of it .... not sure how that happened but I bet it's been like that for a while .....

So next thing was to take off the air box to get access to the front plugs. Once that was off I thought I'd take the opportunity to fit the early model snorkel and frame inserts to help it breathe a bit better.

Swapped the right hand frame insert quite easily .... once I'd got the fairings off.
Then the fun began.
I started on the left hand side and after a lot of pushing, pulling, head scratching etc I reluctantly concluded that the left hand frame insert can't be removed without taking off the front cylinder cam cover !!!!!
Gave up at that point - it'll have to wait until I come to check my valve clearances.
So then I swapped the right one back again.

Having cleaned and gapped the plugs and stuck the airbox back on (by now it was dark) I gave up for the day and will sort out the backfiring issue tomorrow.

I was up to something similar at the weekend and with a fair bit of sweat you can get the frame insert out without removing the rocker cover.

It does take quite a bit of force and will mark, but not really damage the plastic.

Mine came out by pulling the front edge in towards the rocker cover then pushing from the ouside as well as pulling from the inside till it popped through. Mind your fingers.

Not sure how hard it will be to put back in though.

It was pretty hot here at the weekend (mid 30's) so a bit of heat might help, I'm gonna try softening things up with the paint stripper gun when I put it back in.

Yeah, tried pulling like that and was of the opinion that I might just get it out .... but:
a) Would it be in one piece?
b) How on earth would I get one back in?

Temps here were roughly 5 degrees - maybe heat would help.

Think I'll wait until the cam cover is off

..... though I could always give Nooj a ring ... I'm sure a hacksaw or angle-grinder would be able to take enough off of the frame to ease it out ......

It won't break, it's not brittle.

I know I've put it back in before, but I can't remember forcing it in. It might have been when I checked the valve clearances, so with the rocker cover off. I'm not taking the rocker cover off this time so I'll let you know how I get on.

I think the more open inserts should be a little more flexible so shoulg go in easier?
