Pondering the looks

#1 Post by ReggieGasket » Mon Oct 12, 2009 5:33 pm

Hi, I'm starting to ponder what styling I fancy. I've got the metallic red Falco from 2000. At pesent the mudguard, tank, upper fairing and seat are all red, but the middle fairings and belly pan are black. There's no hugger and the numberplate holder is standard. The exhaust are Scorpion and a sort of light gold colour, which is growing on me, but do fancy oval titanium or carbon look. I'm probably happy to stay red, although a full respray is not out of the question - wondering about some kind of white with black or grey?

Assuming I keep the red tank, upper fairing and seat, what options do I have? I fancy a carbon mudguard, but not sure how to match that to the black middle and belly pan. Any ideas gratefully received. Oh probably will get some OZ wheels at some stage, so that may affect choice. Now I'm getting confused...

Colour scheme...

#2 Post by GregD-UK » Mon Oct 12, 2009 6:07 pm

Hi all,

OK, I was like you when I first got my falco :smt002 But, I stuck with a colour scheme that I wanted i.e. Black & Gold. So, I over time duly added all that is black and gold with some carbon thrown in for good measure :smt003

Pick your chosen colour or colours and build over time the look you want fella :smt006 Ultimately, the colours are your choice!

Enjoy all that you do... Pics with progression would be good to watch on here as well :smt001
My warranty is the clear/smoked tail lights around the corner!!

I started with black, then added a black double bubble screen, then added a hugger in black, then just for something different I went for a belly pan in black.
I did leave the Blue stickers on !

P.S. The wheels will need powder coating soon and I was thinking of doing them ...................................

It's possibly an age thing, I always liked the old JPS bikes.

I've already put a DB on from Skidmarx, but have gone for clear. I've always like mat black, but spraying the tank is a big decision. I'm wondering if there'a a way of leaving the tank red, but doing something with the fairings and seat a bit like the old TZRs. Perhaps red with carbon bits is the way. Perhaps the OZ wheels will suggest a colour scheme...

Must be something wrong with me (or all of you :smt002 ) ) then, cos, apart from the cans, I like them to look like they just rolled out of the factory

I think I'm with Dave here. I'm all for subtle mods (especially functional upgrades like suspension, brakes and more power), but I tend to leave bodywork alone (things like belly pans and huggers excepted).

I know most of us are in Falco ownership for the long term, but any kind of non-standard paintjob inevitably causes the bike to lose value. Unless you have a very sure eye for this kind of thing then it can easily wind up looking a lot worse than standard. I've lost count of the number of gash race-rep paintjobs I've been offended by.

Sorry to introduce a note of caution, but...

I think most of us do .... we just find bits and pieces that personalise them a bit more.

A lot think that a bellypan improves the look, a tail tidy improves the back end and a mille swinger is just more sexy (I've done the first and third but not yet the second) but I think most other changes are done to improve handling (above the good level that it has from the factory) or to make the riding position more comfortable for those that can't cope with the sports position. Some of these things change the appearance but I think that is usually not the prime motivator.

There again, I could be wrong - it's just my assumption.

i change indicators around a fair bit..... currently have blisters on the front and some little ones on the tail, where the passenger grab rail mounts....

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for improving the performance (cans, PCIII & K&N in my case), it's just that I like the virginal, never been touched look.

That has just reminded me of Squeeler by AC/DC for some reason :smt017

And because people like to see bikes in their original state, I've kept all my standard parts so that if:
  • A) I should ever happen to sell it
    Or
    B) The Falco were to become a sought after classic
I could return it to stock (and sell off all of the goodies to those that want to make theirs better)

...... so, effectively I'm preserving the original parts and at the same time benefiting from the replacement bits that work better.

.... there again I have a bit of an overstocking issue on some of the standard spares .... not sure how I will use 3 standard oil tanks, 6 standard exhaust cans, 2 standard exhaust systems and 2 blue-spring shocks to name but a few .....

Not many of us normally go past the hugger and belly pan anyway, but there have been a few Falco Fighter variations, sometimes through necessity after an accident.
I like them pretty much as they come myself Dave, just think the bottom half of the bike is a bit untidy without the belly pan. It covers things like the stainless pipes that go brown without constant cleaning etc..

Always have to go one better don't you Andy, I've only got 4 standard cans and just one blue spring shock! Plus zero oil tanks and standard exhausts!

Yes, can't argue with the economics here. Selling a stock bike is the best option. The quality of a respray will never match the original either a few bikes look any better when done. I do like the metallic red of mine and will probably keep it that way; it's certainly the best option financially. But I did get the bike cheaper than I thought I would and there's a budget for playing aboot with it :smt003

If I put a carbon front mudguard on, what colour for the lower fairings and the belly pan? I'm just fishing for ideas. At present they are both black, which would work OK, but I do like carbon. Does anyone do a carbon belly pan?
