so who's going to comment???

he called his dance partner a 'paki' after she got a spray tan.... (even though she has an Indian background?)

is this out of order OR should it be taken with a sense of humour like Bruce Forsythe said?
you say potato ..... I say vodka!

Dunno what the thread title is on about (or much of the original post)

However my son's team got thrown out of a football league because he was heard to be shouting to one of his team mates "mark the Chinaman".

Given that when playing football you don't know the opposition players names, they wear the same kit and instructions need to be communicated quickly I fail to understand why this was considered racist - especially as nothing derogatory was said.

My feeling is that the racist part in this is with the person who chucked them out as he must have considered the term Chinaman to be derogatory - thus expressing the view that the Chinese are somehow lesser than others - clearly not part of what was said on the pitch.

I strongly object to racism - where people come from is not important - how people are as individuals counts.
What I do object to is people suggesting that things are racist just because nationality or background are mentioned - irrespective of whether something derogatory has been said.

Also a bit of banter based on stereotypes is also part of what binds us together ... though clearly this has to remain within "acceptable" bounds.

That said, the way the law is on these things does not consider whether offence was meant but whether offence was taken.
I guess the balance does need to be this way round to make us consider what we say and the risks we take in saying it.

Reminds me of being in the rugby club one night and my mate telling us a story (he's black as the ace of spades) to which I commented, 'you black b*stard!!', a guy from the opposite team says, 'hey mate, you can't say that, thats racist' queue my mate, 'whats wrong with that, I'm black and I'm a b*stard!' :smt003

We have a right hoot training in winter, punt the ball past the last floodlight, send him after it and he dissapears. You can only see eyes and teeth coming back!

All of it is in good humour, we know when to tow the line. I suppose its because we know him, we'd never do it to a complete stranger as they may take a different view on it.

Had a funny thing happen where I work (Police HQ). A Control Room Sgt reported someone for calling a particular person a 'fat cow'. The person who was called a fat cow strenuously objected to her mate being in trouble for having a bit of banter with her (and she claimed it was NOT derogatory because she IS a fat cow!!!) - she even got a solicitor to represent her because she was so cross! And she won! They had to back down.
The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.

typical old bill, you would have thought they would be busy enough catching crims and beating up/shooting in the head/C.S Gassing innocent people, rather than pillorying their own. I bet the person who had the complaint brought against them, was sent to "coventry" buy all the others, not wanting to be "tarnished"

Trouble is the police, like many organisations, have lost their way - too busy back covering to do the job they're paid for.
The Sgt was in a no win situation.
If she hadn't said anything and the woman who was called a cow complained, the Sgt would be in the shit for not reporting it.

It’s all very difficult as things were much different when I was younger. No Andy not in the time of horse drawn carriages and oil lamps!
Any of our mates that came from Ireland were often called Paddy, (or Paddies), and Scottish friends were often called Jock or (Scotties), Newcastle friends were called Geordies, and we did sometimes use the word P**is when talking about people from Pakistan in a friendly way. Even now I have English born Pakistani colleagues at work who talk about their bloody Paki cricket team, when they are playing badly.
It really is all about how you use the word for me, a joke is a joke and hate is very different.
People have always tended to shorten names and things for convenience and it started off just a shortened version of Pakistani in the same way they would call us Brits, would we ever consider that racist. I don’t think so unless it was being used in a racist hateful way.
As always it is not the words it is how you use them.
Then again I’m just an old fart, so how would I know, as for PC, I’m sat at one now!

All the while we, the taxpayers, are paying for it. Like all public servants, they tend to forget who they serv. Far too much power Too little accountability. I wonder how Commander Cressida Dick is doing? Hopefull kicked out with a dishonoreable discharge.

I got myself into deep poo a while back for calling a paki a paki, but only after he repeatedly called me jock. Now normally it wouldn't bother me, but this twat just had an attitude and was a complete dick.

So I got hauled up in front of the management, but when I suggested that his use of jock was also racist they didn't agree. I walked out of the room at that point and when challenged I suggested they sought legal advice before proceeding further as that was what I was doing.

The issue was never brought up again. Matey was dismissed a few weeks later due to misuse of company property (he was doing jobs on the side and writing his thesis on company time and using company resources). He tried to turn that into a race issue too, but failed.

I'd say it's harmless fun, but there are way too many do gooder knobs and serial complainers about to take the piss anymore. Unless of course you're white, male, young, but not too young and heterosexual. Then you're fair game.
