Falco - Sell or part out?

Morning all,

I have recently struggled with the decision to sell the falco, not because of the credit crunch or cos I've had enough, simply because I'm incapable of riding. I have knee injurys, which has pretty much prevented me from riding this year (managed a whole 800 miles) and its likely to run into next year too as they reckon i need an op, which means physio at the back of it and more time off. Quite gutted, but I refuse to leave her sitting for that long without getting used, complete waste of a bike!

The bike is a 2001 (Y) in Black with 22k on the clock, with a few choice mods:

OZ Wheels with BT016 shoes
Ohlins rear shcok
Ohlins steering damper
Renthal 44t Rear Sprocket and Chain
Scorpion Carbon Fibre Cans
Skidmarx Belly Pan
Black Double Bubble Screen
Acumen Digital gear indicator
Scotoiler

and
Ohlins front springs (not fitted yet)
Skidmarx Carbon Fibre rear hugger - which i took off the bike after a year because I hated it!

Now, I was thinking about just selling it, but as there are parts in that list that cost me a small fortune, I was thinking it may be more economical to sell them off individually and return the bike back to standard, I notice that a few guys on the forum have done this so I was just wondering what the general concensus was. It'd be a shame to break her, however if i can make more selling off individually then I suppose I should

Any opinions?

I think the general view is you will always make more putting the bike back to standard and selling the goodies separately.

If you go that way can I register an interest in the belly pan, steering damper and provided they are the original lightweight versions, Oz wheels :)

Oh and sorry to hear about your knee problems, I had problems to a while back, not a severe but incapacitating none the less, that took a year or so to heal. Heal it did though.

Yeah thats kinda what I figured. Probably get more for it that way, however as i say its a damn shame to do it, I spent a lot of time and money getting her the way she is.

Interest noted, yes the wheels are the original lightweight versions, and I can honestly say the best mod I made to the bike. I'd have to source a set of original wheels tho, as some bugger broke into my garage and stole the old ones (fortunately the bike was away getting work done), so thats all they got.

Yeah the knee thing aint good, its actually throbbing as I type which royally sucks. Went up for weekend ride up to skye during the summer, covered about 600 miles in that trip, and my friends were getting sick tired of me stopping every 30mins or so to stretch out, i was loaded up with painkillers too and they didnt help at all, it was that trip that made me realise that the bike would probably have to go :-(

I'd have a similar attachment to mine. I think to most of us enthusiastic owners the bike is more than the sum of the parts. Yes it would be a shame however not every person you might sell the bike to is going to appreciate the subtleties of what you’ve done.
I bought mine complete with all goodies and paid a premium for them but not as much as it would have cost me to do myself. From then on I’ve added a few enhancements of my own. I’d rather keep my original wheels as well but would swap mine over plus some cash, so that sorting standard wheels becomes my problem as and when, not yours.

lol and the vultures circle. Havent gotten to thinking about prices yet, to be honest I wouldnt even know where to begin. I knew the wheels would get attention, they were like hens teeth when I managed to get them.

Trying to weigh up selling whole against stripping to see the difference

I've got a very similar 2001 in Black. Mine has a few more miles on it , 28K, and is a bit lower spec, (std wheels, RSV White spring rear shock, but other bits similar).
Looking at eBay MCN and Bike Trader, I wouldn't think much more than about £2K or so. Have seen a few pulled out on eBay at £1600.
With all the bits I would still ask about £2500, but at this time of year you probably won't get it, even though the bits cost you very much more.
I think you should try it at £2k in standard nick and see what you can get for the bits. The wheels and Ohlins rear shock alone should sell for enough to take you well past the £2.5k figure.
You already have some interest on here.
I might be interested in the wheels and possibly the rear shock, but just about to go on hols, so not too well off at moment!
Think of some prices and post the bits up on here and see what response you get, or just ask people to make offers as some have already shown interest.

Thanks for the very candid reply, you pretty much told me what i was already thinking. I too am going off on holiday at the end of the week for a fortnight, but when i return I think i'll start the strip down..... thats gonna be a pain lol...... and get selling. You are of course correct, the wheel and shock were mightily expensive so returning some cash on them wouldnt be a bad thing.

Hi, sorry to hear about the knees. Make sure you see a good physio, as GPs are very poor with this type of injury. They tend to say "rest" or "don't do it any more", but very often this will never cure the problem. I know a very good one if you live in the north west.

Yes, you'll get a significant amount of dosh more by sellign the parts separately. Especially the high value bits like shocks and wheels.

You say the wheels were a very good mod - I'm interested to hear what difference they made to how the bike handled? Yes, I'm interested in yours BTW

Yeah I've already decided that I'm parting it out now. My mate and I are gonna strip it back to standard, when i get back and then all the parts will be available to buy.

The wheels just simply made the bike more nimble, it was quicker on the acceleration, cornering became a revelation. Turn in and 'flipibility' (if thats such a word) made the bike wicked in the twisties.... it is easily the best mod I made, i couldnt reccomend it enough. (that was not a plug to sell tho

)
