front wheel removal

#1 Post by scorpio24v » Tue Sep 01, 2009 5:13 pm

Time has come for new rubber I have sourced a pair of Roadsmarts for £150 but i have to take the loose wheels to the fitter. I have an abba stand so getting the rear outs a doddle but how do you lift the front to get the front wheel out? I am not happy in putting a trolly jack under the exhausts and there isnt a suitable jacking point on the crankcases, I havnt got a roof truss in my garage to suspend the front from so how do you do it?

I have a stand that mounts at the swing arm pivot and the bike is nearly balnced about that point, so I press onto the seat grab rails to get it on the back wheel then place (kick....) a wooden block under the oil tank to stop the possibility of it tipping forward.

If you have a rear stand and a car trolley jack you can jack under the oil tank it fits a trolley jack cup just right :smt001
You are not lifting the hole bike just supporting the front end.
It's best to b put a suitable piece of rubber mat or carpet underlay between the cup and tank though. I also zip tied the rear stand pegs for safe measure. Used this method for over 7 years working on my falco with no ill effects.
I have an abba stand but found it tiresome to use except when lifting out the swing arm or shock then its very usefully :smt004

Maybe not the answer you want, I just use rear & front paddock stands, lifts both wheels clear and is pretty stable. Like you, I wasn't keen on putting something under the exhausts, or something slipping (kids + pushbikes in garage + suspended bike = damaged kids + damaged bike)

If you've got a rear stand already, a front is about £20-£30 iirc, or you often seen deals on Busters, M&P, for front & rear stands

Hi, I use an Abba Stand and used to use a scissor jack under the oil tank, it was stable enough but I didn't like putting pressure on the oil tank, so I borrowed my brothers front stand and forgot to give it back :smt002

Thanks Thumper, I`ve got a trolley jack and have used it as suggested. Cheers.

I think i may have found another difference in the later Falco`s with the Marzocchi forks. The front axle nut is a 30mm jobbie not a 28mm as elswhere on the forum suggests.

Online parts catalogue just lists the one part for all years.

http://www.ultimateparts.net/shop/part. ... -AP8152335

I thought it was 30mm front, 32mm rear.

Maybe we've typed up incorrectly on a previous occasion (may be me? maybe doing it from memory and got it wrong?)

Maybe they are different

EDIT: Just done a search and found some numptie called D-Rider did post up that they were 28mm ..... very sorry
