Falco vs R1's......

#1 Post by jayboy » Tue Sep 01, 2009 12:44 pm

Me, my brother, a mate and his mate all went for a blast on Sunday - all 3 of them on R1's - not happy being the odd one out, but then, I was the individual one with a nice sounding bike!

Thought they'd be out to prove something over me, to be honest, but as I normally seem to choose the routes we take, I managed to nose my way up front.
After a quick Red Bull and Unleaded stop, we headed off onto one of my favourite B roads - which is pretty damn straight & quick, after a few early changes of direction. Anyway, it was either my memory of the road or large balls + V-twin grunt theat let me show all 3 a clean pair of cans (heels!)
Only once I'd slowed up in a 50 zone did the first loony catch me - probably by doing 80 in said 50, just to catch me! :smt018
Great fun! :smt003

Later on, i had half hour on my bro's R1, which I had been tempted to buy cheap earlier. He's keeping it now anyway, but made an odd comparison;
You sit a lot nearer the front wheel, the seat - peg relationship is more comfortable, the front end is more twitchy AND you have to hang off and put a lot more effort into turning the thing!
Was quite mad following my bike and hearing it roar off on the torque - I kept almost stalling the R1 off junctions etc. Fun, but would take a long time to get used to again after the Falco, which as my bro said "It's just effortless to go quick on!" think he was quite impressed & surprised at the same time.

My mates got an R1 with Ohlins front and back, he`s well experienced as weve both been on bikes for 35 years. We went for a rideout a couple of weekls ago with me in the lead on my bog stock, apart from the Leo Vinces, fast bronze Falco and left him way behind round the twistys, alright i have local knoweledge but hes got 150BHP.

Afterwards he reckoned that was the fastest he had been round the Finchingfield bends respect to the Falco.

Ha ha, nice.

It was weird for me, struggling to keep up with my own bike, I just couldn't muscle the R1 anywhere like the Falco - and I had expected it to be razor sharp.
Admittedly, the R1 has done more miles and the head bearings tell the tale of many a wheelie ! - it didn't feel as solid or as well set up, cause it was bouncing all over the bumps in the road too.
Amwesome on a good piece of road though 40-150 is amazing, but I remember his last one I rode feeling quicker - or maybe peakier than this one. Thought it's feel really quick after the Falco, but it just a different sort of pull, the Falco is definitely more on/off.

no one was more surpised as me, I was expecting the blue and white missile to flash past, but it never happened. On the straight it would have been a different story
