I was sat in my chair after tea, watching telly at the side of the patio window at about 20:55 hrs tonight, when I looked up and saw two really bright yellowish lights in the sky coming towards us. First I thought "must be the police helicopter, but the lights are funny". Dashed outside and I couldn't hear anything. Bit of wind noise, just some traffic noise from the A57 nearly a mile away. It was flying at the approximate height of the police chopper but quite a bit quicker and silent. The spot light(s) on the chopper must be HID or halogen but they always look very white and have a narrow beam, this thing had two big front lights, yellowy gold and may have been vibrating as they seemed to flicker. It came from the south heading north and passed just to the east of my place, (between Worksop and J31 of the M1), and past just to the east of me so I got a view from the side.
From the side I could see that it had similar front and rear lights angled down at about 45 degrees so you could see broad beams of light, definately nothing like the pencil beam of the police searchlight, and it was still silent. It also had similar strong lights on the side, (probably both sides), they were again very bright but as you looked at them it almost seemed that the thing was burning up as they flickered very bright and yellowy gold. I called the wife and she saw it as it moved away to the north, with the side flickering very bright and again similar lights on the back to the ones on the front, like two very big spotlights with very broad beams.
Still pretty low and silent.
You'll probably be rolling araound laughing by now, but I have never seen anything like this before and I ain't been drinking. If ever I see or hear anything weird I always have to look for a logical explanation.

It was silent and low, so not a helicopter, light plane or a 757 heading for Finningley/Robin Hood airport.
I was thinking, could it be a plane gliding into an emergency landing at Finningley with both engines out.
Perhaps somebody can help here, but landing lights are again normally much whiter and more spread out facing forward and I have never seen any grouped very close together like these with golden yellow beams covering a full 360 degrees and angled down at 45 degrees.
Is there any RAF stuff with downward lights in this configuration?
If they have anything like this, why was it so bloody quiet.
If it was a comet or something, it would probaly not have been this low and if it had been you would surely have heard it.
Old satelite burning up? How do you explaing the lights?
If the wife hadn't seen it as well, I would have been doubting myself, but she did and I can't think of anything that fits the bill, what the bloody hell was it?
