N Korea to disarm nukes

#1 Post by Kwackerz » Tue Feb 13, 2007 10:55 am

BEIJING (Reuters) - North Korea agreed to take steps towards nuclear disarmament under a groundbreaking deal struck on Tuesday that will bring the impoverished communist state more than $300 million (154 million pounds) worth of aid.
The proposed plan hammered out by the two Koreas, the United States, Japan, Russia, and China will only be the first step in locating and dismantling North Korea's nuclear arms activities, leaving many crucial questions to future negotiations.

"This is only one phase of denuclearisation. We're not done," chief U.S. negotiator Christopher Hill said.

Good ... now all we need is for Russia, China, Israel, France, India, Pakistan, USA, UK and anyone else to follow suit and we can hope for the beginnings of a better future (ignoring the issues of Chemical, Biological and some of the nastier conventional weaponry)

So have the States been blackmailed or has N.Korea been bribed? :smt002

Under the agreement, North Korea must take the steps within 60 days, and in return it will receive 50,000 tonnes of fuel oil or economic aid of equal value.

It will receive another 950,000 tonnes of fuel oil or equivalent when it takes further steps to disable its nuclear capabilities, including providing a complete inventory of its plutonium -- the fuel used in Pyongyang's first nuclear test blast in October.
All sounds very "green" doesn't it? :smt017

OK .... I've a plan.

The RiderSite must band together to create a Nuclear Development Programme. Fortunately we don't actually have to make the weapons - we just have to make people think we've got them.

It's quite believable - TN is famed for going Ballistic (dunno how often he goes Intercontinental though)

... and, let's face it, who's not going to be mightily alamed if we rumour that it is none other than Gio with his finger on the button !!

Well, after a minimal period of negotiation we can agree to disband our nuclear project in return for unlimited supplies of fuel on which to run our bikes (plus a bit of spare cash to put towards servicing, consumables, insurance etc).

Job Done

Thanks North Korea for the education and inspiration.

As far as I am aware they are still negotiating the end of the Korean war. My 50p is on this being a way of gaining time. The Yanks wont raise their sanctions because the N Koreans havent proved trustworthy and the North Koreans will find a hundred and one reasons for not shutting down the reactor. Incidentally, plutonium is extracted from used reactor fuel so if they have a stockpile of this, then shutting down the reactor means nothing.

There was a similar agreement over a decade ago, that the N.Koreans reneged on.
