Who's been a naughty boy then?

#1 Post by HisNibbs » Wed Aug 05, 2009 10:44 pm

As I’ve been going stir crazy what with a mild case of flu and hanging around the house for a few days watching the incessant rain, I had a little run this evening.

I normally ride on minimum throttle, minimum revs, medium brakes, maximum lean. Well close to anyway which means I rarely see more than 6K and quarter throttle. Doesn’t sound like much but given 6k, now back on standard gearing is good for..... Well you know the answer to that, more than adequate for “pootling” about the lanes. My word 8 through 9 with a fair hand full is quite exhilarating coming off a round about and I understand, could become addictive. I also understand in certain circumstances possibly not legal. (Sort of depends what gear you are in so it was first obviously....)

Even though I am pretty careful it does make me think these things when given just a little stick, are more at home on a track than trying to be reasonably legal on public roads though.

You know I've been told t he first part of coming to terms with addiction is to admit you have one. So we got some addicts out there?:smt002

Oh Bugger.

It was hard enough trying to keep up with you when you weren't on it.

I reckon you need to accidently misplace your license and get a spare :smt009

My name is Howard, I have a Falco problem!

Yeh I have to admit, I'm an addict.
Like you, I often ride the thing just poodling about on my own, up to about 6K and quick shift up through the gears, and it will still outrun most normal road traffic, including a quite few bikes. Even on a 15T front sprocket 6K is pretty quick in 6th.
Then again it's nice to let it go out to 10K plus occasionally, through as many gears as you think you might get away with, and I still find myself thinking (even after 5 years) shit this thing is still bloody quick. It's not so much the top speed more they way it gets you there.
Commented in an earlier thread about opening it up from around 3k in 4th and letting it go out all the way to 10k without a gear change, magic.

Sorry but I won't be coming to Falcoholics Anonymous any more, I don't want to be cured. :smt004 :smt001 :smt004

In France the other week I really went for it. Getting the red light up on a few gear changes and doing some rather naughty triple figures. The acceleration was mental and well addictive, easily kept up with the fireblades, the only bike that really got away from me was the ZX10R

The Falco is an extremely sporty machine. First time I've had a thou and a V-twin.

I also keep opening mine up in 4th just for the sound and the buzz on little bursts to work.

it nearly got me nicked though (look at me blaming the bike!!) on Tuesday. I was just opening it up and spotted a hi viz in a layby at the last minute, slammed the brakes on and dropped a gear, bit of a fish tail and then a bike copper is waving me and a car in to the lay by.

He congratulated me on my observation skills as he clocked the car at 58 (in a 40) and I was about to overtake and managed to get it down to 42 on his gun. He said 'lovely bike, we're here quite often, off you go'. I love bike cops. In 8 years I've been pulled 5 times, each time by a bike cop, each time a little chat and on you go son. :smt003

I keep on reving upto 10k just for the hell of it. The only thing complaining is the rear tyre. Now bald in the middle. Normally I keep her under 6k, there is just no need for more unless you want to go vertical.

...certainly puts a smile on the dial when you can let the horses loose. Best 'straight' line hooning for me was on a largely empty bit of autobahn heading for the Czech border last easter - gently curving and undulating low mountain road with only a few trucks to frighten here and there. Modestly illegal triple figures attained, oddly enough, to the theme tune from 'The Greatest American Hero' playing in my head... "Believe it or not, I'm walking on air. I never thought I could feel so free-ee-ee. Flying away on a wing and a prayer. Who could it beeeee? Believe it or not, it's just me!"

You know what I love? And I mean LOVE?

Downshifting into 3rd and 2nd and letting the revs drop from ~6k to ~3k. What a sound. :smt007
