Paddock Stands v Abba Stand

#1 Post by bluedimension » Wed Aug 05, 2009 7:31 pm

I currently have a rear paddock stand which I am happy with. I have never used a front stand and am toying with purchasing a headstock stand but part of me says I should go for an Abba stand.

Your views are sought to assist my decision making.

I have never used an Abba stand but saw the demo' at the NEC and it looked easy enough to use.

...saw one in action visiting another forum member today. Totally cool! :smt004 steady, easy for one person to operate - so much less kerfuffle than hooks and bobbins.

go for abba stand - and the headstock stand :)

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

I have an Abba stand and a rear padock stand. The latter is rarely used.
If the front wheel is out as a precautionary measure I have used some wooden blocks under the oil tank to make sure it doesn't tip forward but they don't need to cary any real weight.

Seconded... It all depends whether you think you will need to remove your shock or swingarm. If you answer yes to either of these, you need an Abba stand.

I bought a Harris front paddock stand last Xmas (stainless steel, lovely) and I'm very glad I did. Makes working on the front end a piece of the proverbial...

Another vote for Abba. They are the dogs bollocks. Get universal pins, too. Do the job and you can use them on different bikes.

If it's going to be for use solely at home, ABBA!

Paddock stands were designed primarily for just that.. a quick fix way of lifting the front or rear end of the bike in the paddock. a make do solution if you like.

Mate has an ABBA at home and swears by it. he's a little down on power these days and still manages to lift his bike to comfortable working height using his ABBA and a small child.

Dunno what the child does.. fetch coffee I think.

The Abba type stand looks really easy to replicate.

A couple of bits of square tubing welded together and a bar to fit thru' the swingarm pivot.

I detect a project coming on.

Has anyone got a picture of these adaptors?
My Ulti-Pro is very similar to an Abba but doesn't have these things which are so useful if ever I want to remove the swingarm again.
I'm wondering what I'd need to do to fit the Abba Adapters to the Ulti-pro stand .... so some pics would be a good starting point.

Don't have any pics (sorry), but the swingarm removal adaptors are basically short pieces of (approx) 25mm bar with an hole machined in them for an M8 bolt to pass through. The piece of bar sits in the stand cups and the M8 bolt screws into the footrest braket that is closest to the swingarm pivot.

Instead of the stand pivoting on the swingarm recesses, it pivots on a footrest mounting.

I'm not exactly sure what O/d the Abba adaptors are, but I'm sure someone can provide that info. Besides, if you're trying to make an equivalent for an Ulti-pro it doesn't really matter...
