Shiver S ..... Falco Replacement ?

#1 Post by D-Rider » Mon Jul 27, 2009 11:40 pm

Last time I called in at Speedaway, there was a half-faired Shiver S outside (I think it was a customer bike awaiting a service).
First time I'd actually seen one and as it's been bandied about as filling the Falco's niche, I took some pics (on my mobile).
I've been meaning to post them for a while .... sorry it's taken so long.

Have they been taking too much notice of the Falcuono trend and think that we all want sit-up-and-beg bikes with less fairing panels?

Views please?

My view is that this is not a Falco replacement

Another of my views is that the front mudguard is hideous

What are the chances of a de-tuned RSV4 motor making it's way into a mostly sports-but slightly touring chassis? Could there be an 'official' V4 Falco on the way??? :smt003

..... and then, what are the chances of being able to afford one (or, at least, getting such expenditure past the mrs) ....

Nice idea though

My thoughts entirely. I'd be very interested in something like that. I bet it'd attract a lot of VFR owners who are pissed off with the all the VTEC/ linked brakes crap that recent VFRs have been festooned with.

I think it probably IS the Falco replacement in real terms, or the 1200 version will be a bit nearer, but I won't be replacing mine with one I don't think. :smt017
Will reserve judgement for now, but it looks nothing like as good to me and yes the front mudgard is hideous.
Lets face it the main reason we love the Falco is because it was originally designed as something only slightly cheaper than the Mille with a beautiful unique frame, lots of expensive parts and it looked great. (slipper clutch on a bike of this price 10 years ago!)
It did not sell well when it was first advertised at £8k plus, but was an incredible bargain when prices were later lowered. The Shiver is always going to look more of a budget bike, because that is what it is, and the 750 version looks great against the 600 Jap opposition in the same sort of class.

Yep, that's the big problem for a replacement Howard. Most of us bought the Falco at a price well below that which Aprilia planned to sell them.
Aprilia probably now understands the price point for buyers like us and the Shiver has come in as only a bit more than we paid for the Falcos.

The trouble is, those of us that bought the discounted Falco and are playing in that cost segment, have got used to a high spec bike for that money ... and that's what we expect to replace with (should that replacement-day ever dawn). Unfortunately, it seems that Aprilia can't knock out the sort of bike we're after for that sort of money.

Guess that a lot of these Shivery things will go to new owners that have not been raised on a diet of caviare for the price of pilchards.

Many of the rest of us will just keep our special bikes going .... which isn't a bad thing .....

I don't think there will ever be (or has ever been) a bike that has such a high spec for the money most of us paid. I was in Helmsley a couple of weeks ago and three guys jumped off new bikes - this years R1s and GSXRs and stood drooling at my Falco. None of them knew what it was and could not believe how such a high spec bike and stunning bike had completely passed them by over the years.

Me....smug....nah! :smt002

I for one will be keeping mine for a long long time :smt001

Just buy yourself a new hacksaw and an rsv4 engine will fit right in the falco :smt003

There's a V4 Tuono on the way, allegedly : http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/ ... -pictures/

But I don't see Aprilia venuring into anything resembling sports tourers again - it's a declining sector of the bike market, having been overtaken by 'adventure' bikes - and they had a bad experience with the Futura's poor sales.

Perhaps they'll get round to something more on the lines of the Caponord?

But it would be great to see a V4 Futura, although I'd really miss the Rotax engine.

Oh, and I can't see the Shiver filling the Falco niche - not man enough. And, with the fairing, it's too Fazer-like

I have ridden the Shiver. It was given to me as a courtesy bike from the dealer. It is a very enjoyable ride with an eager free revving engine. A fun bike. However, itis not a sports bike and fits into a different niche than the Falco. I would place it as a good commuter and fun ride tool but not in the sport-touring mode. I don't see Aprilia bothering with another bike like the Falco in the forseeable future. Neither it, or the Futura were sales successes, despite both being great bikes.

no chance of a v4 sports tourer

but i will put even money on a 1200 L tourer to replace the futura....

and i have seen pictures of the new 1200 shiver - looks ok

its not a falco though

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

The Shiver may well be ok to ride, and at some point we'll probably all have to replace our Falco's (listen to me, I've not even picked mine up yet :smt005 ), but any newer model is never going to have the value of the Falco. We're bloomin' lucky that as time and technology has moved on, a once good but slightly less desirable (compared to the Mille) bike, at a reasonable market price, has now become a ridiculously under-priced unique and completely desirable bike. But thank god not everyone sees this - it leaves those that are prepared to do some research and a little left field thinking with more 'bang for buck' than almost anything you could mention. And to top it all, the Falco looks cohesive, gorgeous and right - something I personally consider the Shiver to be entirely lacking. It looks like several bikes joined together - bloody ugly, and not even in a BMW GS type of way either. Course, that's just my opinion, and I loved my Guzzi Le Mans so what the hell do I know :smt003
