Oil and tyres....

#1 Post by Viking » Sun Feb 11, 2007 10:39 pm

Morning all,

I had the misfortune to ride through an oil puddle the other day whilst on the way to to work. :smt013 (Yes, the next few corners were rather interesting!)

Will the oil attack / damage the rubber? The oil seems to have all been flung off now (all over the mudguards / radiators... Yerk!) and I can't see any oil left behind on the tyres.

Should I just bite the bullet and get the tyres replaced? I don't want to, as the front is almost new, and the rear is barely worn. :smt010

If you've run most of the oil off, it should be okay. Tyre rubber is designed to withstand motor oil. If it werent, there'd be a distinct lack of vehicles on the road!

Treat them carefully for a while (until certain all the oil has dispersed) but you should be okay.

I wouldnt change 'em

Thanks Kwackerz,

Most of the oil seems to have disappeared, but I'll be careful for a while longer.

Cheers!

I'd imagine that anything that was there would soon scrub off as you put on a few miles.

I wouldn't worry either.

Just think what your tyres roll through each time you visit a petrol forecourt

I'd say it was an excuse for a big fat rolling burn out :smt020

Thumper, I like the way you think. :smt001

Now, where's the nearest MacDonald's drive-through? :smt004
