Sidestand mod

#1 Post by bigun » Sun Feb 11, 2007 2:38 pm

Hi chaps,

Just thought I'd post up and let you know about the sidestand mod I've just done if anyone is thinking about doing it. (and to make an easy search option for anyone looking!)

I followed Falcomunky's instructions (link below) with one exception. I drilled the hole out etc to allow the falco bolt to fit, only thing I haven't done is bend the spring mount. I've yet to put the spring on as I need a hook to pull it over but that won't be a problem.

Simply, a spot on mod worth doing for peace of mind and simple one to boot. Even retains the Aprilia switch which I've tested and have working! :smt001

Hats off to FM, cracking m8! :smt001 I didn't want the hastle of welding etc as I don't have access to a welder and this has proved the solution!

I used the spring that came with my gsxr stand. managed to fit it by hand (attach spring to falco and stand, then wiggle stand into place) and it seems to work a treat.

Also I've noticed that the position of the font wheel makes a huge difference to the stability of the bike. Facing straight it leans like the standard stand, truned on full left lock it is very stable, turned on full right lock it falls over.

Tanks for the advice gaz.
I didn't try the wheel in different positions. Was just in straight ahead stance as it had been on the paddock stand. Was rock solid tho. :smt017 The stand I have is off a K2 gsxr 1000, dunno if that makes any difference. Will try the other positions this week and report back. :smt001

Haven,t decided whether to reattach sidestand switch or not yet. One bit of the instructions that did confuse me was:

'This does all mean that the pivot bolt is now 'only' secureable by a large lock nut.'

I thought the pivot bolt is only attaches by a lock nut :smt017

The rear hole for the pivot bolt is threaded too.

The rear ole is threaded but the falco bolt doesn't use them, it passes straight through. You need to use the Falco bolt if you want to re-use the switch as thats where it bolts too but you need to use a locknut on the back of the bolt (behine the stand/bracket) to lock the stand in place. I think that makes sense! :smt017 :smt002

I'll be sorting it finally this weekend so I'll pop some piccies up if you need em.

Is there a difference between gsxr 600/1000 K5-K6 stands, as i've looked on ebay and they are advertised for different prices

Seeing as the chassis are essentially the same between the two bikes, i can't see the difference.

I'm not sure m8. I got mine off Nooj on here with the bracket and switch. It just had K2 gsxr1000 written on it in the usual breakers white marker. I assume they just write it on as soon as they take the bits off the bike and don't actually correlate them with other bikes.

I would assume tho in this circumstance that the stands would be similar given the near identical chassis. (don't quote me on that!) :smt002 Maybe the prices are different as more of one bike is crashed hence demands are higher therefore so are prices. :smt017

I don't think you'd go far wrong in buying one and giving it a whirl.

I've got a 600 one on mine and I seem to recall that the 750 was the same.

There was an exhaustive list on the old site I think.

I'm off for a look see :smt006

I think the info on the old site had a link to AF1, not sure if that post has been lost in the crash.

Fitted the GSXR 600 stand this morning. Kept the sidestand switch as well by using the falco centre bolt and drilling a 4.5mm hole in stand.

Dead chuffed. It stands a little more upright but most importantly the foot is a lot further out so it's far more stable.

Now it's time to fit the loud exhausts and the tail tidy

Aye, its spot on aint' it? I refitted my bellypan at weekend too and its all works without cutting that too strangely. Only thing I've found is that its a pain in the arse to kick the stand down as the gearshift is in the way. I'll live with it tho.

Try perkys bracket, it tilts the bike over a bit more with the gixer stand. Mine is a vast improvement to the stock item now.

I tried (and suceeded) in fitting my VTR side stand today!

What a load of rubbish that was, I wonder whether I have been sold the wrong / right stand or not?

Basically I was led to believe (must read these threads a bit closer) that the VTR stand was a simple bolt on job, but the VTR bracket is different to the Falco one and when I swapped the stand over to the Falco bracket the bike nearly fell over. The stand is too short and a bit too far forward for my set up. I was mighty pi**ed off.

Maybe it works with the std shock but it's far to short for use with the Ohlins (mine is at max ride height) so back to the good old extended original for now.
