rather unusually, as i do not often post anything here re health or nursing, i thought i would let a few things be thought about

First off, current betting is for trouble/epidemic in september - the second wave of the virus

contingency plans are in place, all over the uk - and as a member of joe public, i would not be too alarmed about that - its actually straight forward :)

but, people may need to think on a few side effects of if, and i repeat IF we do have a serious presentation.

schools etc are likely to be closed - so those with children are going to have child care issues - i sat down with my wife to consider who would do what - long and short of it is, she would stay at home as the NHS would pay her... as i am in the private sector i would likely not get paid....

some public areas may well be closed - pools, cinemas etc nothing specific but

some industries/services would have annual leave cancelled

hospital visits will stop

gp surgeries will be very busy

idiots will run to the shops and bulk buy in advance.... may be an idea to ensure you have some long life milk about :)

rather unusually, this virus hits the 20 to 60 year olds hardest - so industry may struggle....

guess what i am trying to say is even if it comes to nothing, it may be a good idea to plan ahead.....

Is there any truth in the rumour that Swine flu will hit the police service hardest of all?

I'm not gonna get excited about it - bird flu was going to be an enormous problem......

People love the scares, gives doctors something to do, maybe they should install beer pumps and a bar :)

(I did circulate that to some paramedic friends who get to see the boys in blue often...)

I hear what you say about bird flu, and yes, it could all go the same way.

this time could well be very different - part of my job is infection control and as a part of that i have to attend updates etc - and i can honestly say that many people are getting nervous.

The current critical cases are the reason why - one of those UK critical cases is not a worry - under lying diseases and broad immuno compromise is ok if that makes sense - its the one that is critical with no other underlying diseases that is sending out the warnings as to the virus' potential

Seems things have moved on a bit since Pete's original post.
Critical workers at Local Authorities, are now being selected for the option of having the new Swine Flu Vaccination, when it is released shortly.
I think they have only just started testing it on animals, so won't be going through the normal stringent 2 years or so of tests then!
Slightly worrying!
As I'm an IT manager at a Local Authority, I have been selected to go on a list of people "Necessary to maintain the services of the Authority", who will be considered further, once we know how much of the vaccine we will be actually getting.
It is all confidential at the moment.
We will have the opportunity to refuse, or to try and strengthen our case, based on our state of health and medical history.
Not sure what I think?
As Pete said back in June, it might be time to stock up on Long Life Milk and tinned stuff.
