Another Sidestand Solution

#1 Post by D-Rider » Wed Jun 03, 2009 10:07 pm

Picked this one up from the Club Aprilia forum. Never seen it so cant really comment on it - but it sounds very easy to fit.
Cbr1000R [sidestand] up to 07,straight fit & aprilia side stand switch fits straight on,the honda version only has 2 wires, where ours has 3,Ive got 2,one on the falco & one to swap Gary/busbywoo stand [the alternative sold on ebay]on the mille, because some of the guys have had them fail, the Honda one wont

i believe it is exactly the same as the firestorm stand - hence why it plugs into why our looms etc but only turns the light on, and does not stop the engine if that makes sense....

Not sure, Pete.

The chap that posted this says the Aprilia sidestand switch fits on in place of the Honda CBR one - this will give sidestand position indication and maintain the engine run interlock.

As far as I'm aware, those that have done the Firestorm stand mod have kept the Honda switch that only gives indication of position - not interlock.
I presume (though I may be wrong - having gone the excellent Gixer stand route) that if it were possible to just bolt on the Aprilia switch to the Firestorm stand, somebody would have done so. Therefore, I'm guessing the CBR1000 stand and the Firestorm stands may well be different.

...... but it's just a guess .....

EDIT:
I've done a search for the 2006 CBR1000 sidestand and this is what I turned up:
Image
It does look as though the Falco switch will bolt straight on.

While searching (unsuccessfully) for a similar picture of the Firestorm one, I came across this (it refers to the Super Hawk - the American name for the Firestorm)
Problems: Regular maintenance....chain, steering bearing, rear wheel bearing, another chain (don't buy the cheap one). Had problems with fuel starvation and the engine cutting out...rebuild of fuel petcock solved problem temporarily and a new petcock solved the problem permenently. The Cam Chain Tensioner broke...WHY WON'T HONDA OWN UP TO THE ONLY MAJOR FLAW ON THE SUPERHAWK!!!!!! Jet kit makes the bike move in Boston, but also makes the bike run like #%^$ at high altitudes...this can be compensated for by constantly adjusting the idle screw but is a pain. The side stand bends easy.
Looks as though not all Firestorm owners are happy with their sidestand ... maybe we should suggest they "upgrade" to the Aprilia one :smt005

I would expect that the relative positions of the hole for the pin that turns the rotating switch and the switch body is crucial to the operation of the light and interlock.

from memory the position from the honda diagram looks pretty good, but it's not clear to me what position the switch would be in when mounted.

If it is as shownt hen I'd be pretty confident it would work correctly.

From memory I used the Falco switch with the firestorm stand and the pin was about 90 degrees out. An easy fix though.

I have the VTR stand and drilled an additional hole, 90 degrees counter-clockwise from the VTR position (so when the stand is down the original hole is at 3 o'clock whereas the VTR is as 6 o'clock), and the interlock etc. works fine using the original loom.

I concur with that assessment. I have the Firestorm stand on mine and it's a bit bendy. I also had to weld a larger 'foot' onto the bottom of it to increas the footprint of the bike. I'm not 100% happy with it.

My mate (Firestorm owner) has always had a laugh about the Firestorm stand being an 'upgrade' to the Aprilia stand as in his words 'it's made of cheese'.

I have to say I'm very happy with my modified GSXR stand, as it looks the part and is very stable. The only problem is that it took a fair amount of fiddling and fettling (OK, a lot more than I really wanted) to get it to fit.

Now it's done it's great. Was a bit of a faff and needed a couple of trips to a local engineering firm, though.

My initial intention was to cut the head off both the Falco and GSXR stands and get the top (swivel/bolt) part of the Falco stand welded onto the main part of the GSXR stand. Except the first engineering firm I visited managed to get the stand welded on back to front. :smt011 :smt013 :smt019 :smt017

They then cut and re-welded it, but by that time I'd lost faith as the thing looked a total dog's breakfast. SoI decided to go down a different tack that involved modifying the complete GSXR stand to fit the Falco. This wasn't trivial, as the Falco and GSXR pivots enter from different sides. In retrospect, my first idea was the simplest, but does rely on people being able to follow instructions...
