It's supposed to do WHAT ??

RiDE magazine recently reviewed the Bumpstop bike stand
RiDE wrote:This is a robust, clever piece of kit. Simply bolt it to the floor of your garage, parking area or van, line the front wheel of your bike up to the bottom cup, then roll it in place. The Bumpstop then clamps and locks the front wheel, secure enough for the bike to stand freely, allowing you to work on it, transport it or simply secure it for the night.
We found that when used as a paddock stand (not bolted down) it needed at least two people to guide the bike's wheel into the cup and prevent the stand from moving. However, once the bike is in, it's very secure; we trusted it to hold the bike while we carried out an engine change at a recent race meeting.

Well, I was thinking that this looks like a great bit of kit. According to the review:
  • Simple to use
    Holds the bike firmly
    Offers good security
Albeit a little expensive at £99

... but I let my mind wander .... roll up on my bike .... in to the garage ..... into the bumpstop ..... hop off the bike ..... prepare to lock it up for the night .... the first line of defence - the steering lock ...... Ah! ..... Ummmmmm ! ....... errrrrrrrr !!! ..... How the ##### do you use your most simple locking device with one of these things!!!!
OK, you can run your big chains through the wheels I suppose - but what if you are just leaving it for a short period that you would normally entrust to a steering lock? .... do you really have to get your chains out or leave it unsecured ??

Anyway, once you have chained it up, it's good to know that
...... once the bike is in, it's very secure; we trusted it to hold the bike while we carried out an engine change at a recent race meeting.
..... so that any uninvited visitors can strip it down with ease during the night.

Don't get me wrong, I think it looks like a cool device but to suggest that it improves security doesn't ring true !

Looks good, but how secure is it? It obviously holds the bike in a secure upright position but does it have a locking device? And how easy is it to unpark the bike?

Are these the same devices that the now defunct Speed Ferries used, I travelled with them once when they had the normal strap down routine, but they introduced something like this at a later date.

My insurance don't cover me for theft from home if the steering lock isn't on so no point in spending the dosh, handy for a garage situation, as long as you park in the same space and dont have bicycles and garden stores to trip over

would be ideal for unsuspecting mille owners to park their donor bikes in....

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

They use them on the Isle of Man ferry (when the TT isn't on). I nearly fell off trying to get my bike out of it. Bloody thing! Was stable when it was in there though!
