Speeding ticket from Spain!

#1 Post by Chabby » Sat Apr 11, 2009 7:28 pm

Went for a family break to Spain in February. We hired a car using the wifes credit card as I'd left mine at home. I was a named driver and we both drove throughout our stay.
Fast forward to today and a recorded delivery letter drops through the door. It shows a photo of the hire car (I remember a part reg - sad I know) and says it was doing 126km in a 100km limit. The photo is from the rear you can't tell who's driving. I know this would be a defence in the UK but in Spain I doubt it.
No request for driving licence so just the fine to pay.
As we visit Spain several times a year I suppose I'm going to have to cough up - 100Euros reduced by 30% if you pay within a month, as I don't fancy getting put on a black list for car hire (or locked up at the airport).
When I think of all the times in the UK I've worried about Gatsos and I get zapped on holiday!

please do a scam report first - just too check

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Yeah, first thing I thought of. Seems genuine though. Photo of car, date/location which check out and they've had to have got my wife's details from the rental company.

She's back out at the end of the month so she's taking the letter with her to double check.

One thing mind - I should have signed for the letter for proof of delivery but it was just put through the door. I smell a loophole!

Dunno what Spanish rules are bit over here the fact you didn't recieve the letter is no defence!

I've got a speeding fine from Italy which is dated 2005, haven't paid it and won't, we go to Italy at least once a year.

I wouldn't pay it either.

It'll be far more trouble than it's worth to them to chase it up.

Bit like UK plod chasing up folks who don't produce the documents when given a HORTI.

Can't tell ya how I know that tho. :smt006

Ok Ok.. I give up... what's a HORTI (which I presume is the official anagram for a producer)

I think everyone who works for plod has been calling them 'Horties' for so long we've all forgotten what it stands for! :smt017
