Is there any way of turning the lights off without fecking with fuses etc

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

+1 Use old style switch gear. Its plug and play. Takes 5 mins
