RED NOSE DAY - NO WAY!

#1 Post by BikerGran » Sun Mar 08, 2009 4:01 pm

I was quite shocked to read the following on the NABD forum. It's totally true, it was written by the Chairman Rick Hulse.

Some years ago the NABD were approached by some people from the BBC who were involved in making the short film sections relating to different causes on Comic Relief day. They wanted a short piece about the NABD to include in the ‘Disabled People’ section of the programme.
We agreed to this and a dozen of us spent a long freezing-cold day filming in the Peak District for what was planned to be a thirty second piece of the five minute section to do with disabilities.

Some weeks later I had a call from the director saying that they were so pleased with the film and the positive image it portrayed of disabled people pro-actively helping each other that they were going to make it the lead two-minute feature of the disabilities section.
Obviously we were rather proud of this and happy to see the BBC moving away from the ‘pat the poor drooling cripple on the head’ type of image they had previously favoured when dealing with disability related charities. We wrote to all of our members and supporters and to the bike press encouraging people to support Comic Relief and to look out for our bit on the day.

The BBC sent me a video of the piece and our bit was set to the song “I Wasn’t Born to Follow” off the Easy Rider soundtrack. It was really impressive and showed disabled people reclaiming their independence and living life to the full (and looking cool doing it).

Then three days before Red Nose day I had another call from the BBC director saying “I’m really sorry about this Rick but we’ve had to edit the NABD piece out completely!” There had been a meeting to finalise the running order for Comic Relief and one of the presenters, a tenth rate media nobody called Emma Freud (daughter of the MP Clement Freud who’s only notable contribution to British society was a set of dog food adverts where he was up-staged by a baggy faced dog) had objected to our inclusion on the basis that “Comic Relief should not be associating itself with bikers” and the rest of them agreed so the piece was dropped.

It has pained me every year to see hundreds, if not thousands, of bikers getting involved in fund-raising for a charity that is controlled by people who so obviously despise bikers. I for one will never support such a cause in any shape or form and I urge all other bikers to take the same stand!

And from the NABD Projects Officer

It would seem the cat is well and truly out of the bag on this.
Bike, trike , hotrod and builder forums all over the www have picked up on this and The sense of outrage seems to be building a bit of momentum.

The Beeb has apparently had a high volume of calls and emails complaining about this blatant discrimination by a celebtity nobody who's only claim to fame is that she's married to the bloke who runs comic relief.

Perhaps the BBC needs asking if it's supportive Freud's stance or whether it intends to look into the matter and disipline this misguided and bigoted view by members of it's staff attached to one of it's premier public service events.

There are a couple of Facebook sites about this apparently - I'm not on Facebook myself so I haven't seen them but the links are here:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=56091643799

And if you'd like to complain to the BBC, this is where to do it-

http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/complaints_stage1.shtml

The original discussion on the DisabledBikerForum is Here

I'm really shocked and will certainly not be supporting Red Nose Day! Not that I won't support charities, I shall choose them myself and contribute whatever I think is right - which is what I usually do anyway. But I do usually give some support if there's a local rednose effort - but if Red Nose shouldn't be associated with bikers - so be it!

They'll get nothing from me this year then. The whole thing has got very tired and lame over the years anyway.

Looks as though NABD are aiming to put the boot in to Comic Relief on as many forums (or is it fora) as possible.

Just responded to the same thing on my local forum - and noticed it's popping up on a lot of others too.

Here's what I said:
That does sound as though it was a particularly unfortunate incident but it sounds more like an issue with one celeb and a few BBC officials that wished to appease her rather than something at the heart of Comic Relief.

We know that a lot of society is ignorant about what bikers are like and it should be no great surprise when, from time to time, this slaps us in the chops .... but it's no more than a bit of a setback.

Clearly a lot of people in Comic Relief did think NABD's work was good - they commissioned the film and had elevated it to the lead item - so the reason for pulling it obviously doesn't run right through the organisation.
One of Comic Relief's high-profile supporters is Billy Connelly .... OK the bike he used in one of his other TV's show was a trike - but I see him as pro-biking.

The important thing is that Comic Relief does do a lot of very good work for many poor and disadvantaged people in this world and I for one will continue to support them.

I know that the objection is "they don't want to be associated with bikers" but I don't think that is true throughout the organisation and it's more likely that an anti-Comic Relief stance to be seen as "toys being thrown from the pram" because we didn't get on TV (I know that's not the reason - but so easy to be seen as such).

I'm more interested in what good is done through what they raise and how they use it. Bikers being seen to be contributing this is going to do our image more good (and chip away at these negative attitudes that got the NABD piece pulled) than seen to be boycotting.

Just my opinion.

I wonder if many high profile biking supporters of RND, including the Big Yin, are aware of this. :smt017

I could well see them putting the trollop in her place.

Yeah - it would be good to see the biking celebs proposing that they feature in a piece on the NABD - with those names in it (eg Connelly, Hairy Bikers, Ewan and Charley) I can't see it would get pulled .... but whether NABD would talk to anyone associated with Comic Relief now, who knows?

Been thinking about this a bit more and it's raised more questions in my mind. The explanation of events that is being given starts ....
Some years ago the NABD were approached by some people from the BBC who were involved in making the short film sections relating to different causes on Comic Relief day. They wanted a short piece about the NABD to include in the ‘Disabled People’ section of the programme.
- so this is something that happened several years ago .... why on earth are the protests happening now??? - several years later just before this year's Comic Relief.
Surely, if someone really wanted to sort the issue out, they should have done it there and then - clearing the air and firmly establishing whether Bikers and Biker Charities are in or out? .... and if not then, at very least, well before Comic Relief's major fund raising event of the year.
So here we are, just days before this year's event and this hits the biking forums.
If I were a cynical chap, I might just form the opinion that this has not been done to resolve things but so as to damage this year's Red Nose day - which, in turn will damage the good work done for the poor and disadvantaged both here and overseas.

Now I'm not "in the know" - I don't know the ins and outs of this ... it's just how it looks to me ...

In all honesty, where do they start and stop? There are soooo many causes out there from the one man, blind homeless person, to bikers, to MS, to Alzhemiers to kids who have all kinds of ailments etc etc , they can't feature them all! It's only to be expected that the 'powers that be' have the influence on what is featured and more to the point, where the money goes!

I don't see any protests about where the money DOES go.... just a bunch of bikers now pissed off cos their 'bit' on tv got cut! It's simple, if you don't agree .... then don't donate :smt001

For whatever faults Comic Relief have, they do their bit to help someone.

Thanks for highlighting this BG, I've just Twitter-ed your link to the Facebook site, so I'll keep an eye on who's watching. I'll email someone I know on the Opposition Front Bench to see if I can get some fun going.....

Errr, no.
Freud's actions are completely wrong because as someone high up in the organisation (or married to them) she is deliberately discriminating against a specific group of disabled people for no other reason than her own personal small-minded prejudices, when one of the main aspects of the organisation is to promote the view that ALL disabled people should be treated as worthy community members and valid individuals. She holds a possition of responsibility where you just cannot act like that.

The feature wasn't pulled for lack of time or technical reasons, it was pulled because she does not like bikers. If it was a different minority group that had been pulled because she didn't like Jews or lesbians for instance, it would be all over the national press and she would never work for the BBC again.

I didn't say she was right (if that IS her opinion!) AND if it is, then sad to say she isn't alone. How many people think bikers deserve what they get for the sheer audacity of actually getting on one in the first place? Many more than her that's for sure! The Comic Relief committee are out to grab the majority, are bikers that?

Why has it suddenly just been picked up on by Bike, Trike etc if it was said years ago? :smt017

My concerns over why it was reported only now about something that happened several years ago has been answered.

Apparently it was recorded several years ago to be shown on this year's Red Nose programme.

I still don't think that's any reason not to give through Comic Relief and do some good through them.

Well I don't know about red noses but my face is a bit red now - Rick (NABD chairman) has since posted
I just thought I'd better come on here to set the record straight.
I wrote the blog on the NABD's experience with Comic Relief mainly in a bid to stop people asking me to get involved in events raising money for Comic Relief and sending bloody silly red nose related stuff to me on facebook.
It was also meant to let bikers know of the reaction we had from Comic Relief so that they could make a 'personal choice' on whether or not they wished to support it.
I had no intention of starting a witch hunt over something that happened years ago and I also had no intention of starting a lobbying campaign against the BBC. I appreciate the anger that all bikers feel about this sort of discrimination and the good intentions of those who have joined these causes but I fear it may only serve to keep the work of the NABD out of the mainstream media if it is allowed to go too far
He should have made that clear in the first place - he knows we (NABD members) are a bolshy lot who will campaign at the drop of a hat!

Well I wrote a complaint to Red Nose Day and received a very prompt and courteous reply. And yes my face is a bit red now as well.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your email regarding your concerns about the National Association for Bikers with a Disability film.

The filming of the work of the NABD took place some time ago and was for a piece for the Red Nose Day show at that time.

Comic Relief is proud to have been a long time supporter of disabled people in their fight for equal rights and over a 10 year period committed £17.5 million to support disability projects throughout the UK. We have always tried to portray disabled people positively.

Sometimes difficult decisions about what to include on the night have to be made. These decisions are often made because of time limitations and to ensure a mix of issues, locations and types of activity. We support so many issues; sadly we can't include everything.

Emma Freud is a long time supporter of Comic Relief and has worked tirelessly to help us raise millions of pounds and we are incredibly grateful for her support. She does not get involved in editorial decisions and had nothing to do with the decision not to include this film on the night.

We have written to Mr Hulse outlining our commitment to disability projects throughout the UK and apologising to those who felt they had a cold and wasted day.

With best wishes,

Jenny West

Planning and Internal Communication Manager
